This is exciting news!
In determining how much to charge you for flood cover, insurance companies examine local government flood mapping, historical flood information, terrain data and insurance claims information among other sources.
Everyone's premiums help to pay for flood claims, but if the data says your property is at higher risk of a flood occurring you will pay a higher premium than other property owners. More accurate flood mapping means more appropriate premiums for you.
Have you got questions about flood cover?
Flood Prediction Maps need updating
At last week's Council meeting, I put forward a motion, which thankfully was unanimously supported, to seek a change in the flood prediction maps for the region. The motion was as follows:
That Council be provided with a report on how the current flood level modelling maps for the Fraser Coast can be improved, to more accurately reflect the observed flood levels during flood events.
I have had a number of concerns raised with me for some time now about the inaccuracies of the predictions, in some cases showing blocks of residential homes appearing to be inundated with flood waters at certain levels, when we know from living through floods of that level or higher, that these areas do not get flooded.
This creates other concerns such as some property owners having house sales fall over because the potential buyers check the maps and don't buy the property under the belief that it can easily flood, which isn't the case.
We would like to see these maps improved to show a more accurate representation of what flood predictions can look like for our region.
