"Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre has filled completely just a few times in the past century: a slow, hypnotic process where flood water drains south for months, gently filling the basin. Transformed, the landscape shifts from barren desert to an aquatic wonderland: attracting birdlife, predators, tourists – and surprisingly, yachties. Today, the small town of Maree in South Australia is home to the official Lake Eyre Yacht Club. Established in 2000, the yacht club has its own clubhouse, and despite being seen as a novelty, it is actually a brilliant resource for sailors keen to BYOB (bring your own boat) and set sail." At 2.2m over Belt Bay, Jackboot Bay and Madigan Gulf Lake Eyre is now deeper than last year and deepest since 1989. The local rivers have now dried. The Diamantina has a small flow with Georgina/Eyre Creek now suppling more water than it has for many years into Goyder Lagoon keeping the Warburton at minor flood level. Cooper Creek's most recent pulse is passing through Innamincka now but it will barely make it to the Lake, if it even does, in three months time.
You may want to ask the South Australian Government why the access roads to the Lake are closed and why you can't even walk in this National Park.
