When Pastors Howard and Maureen first gathered for worship at Rock Hosanna Baptist Church in Miller, there were just four or five families in an ageing church building.

From the outset, Howard and Maureen wanted the church to look beyond its walls. They prayer-walked the surrounding streets and got to know their community, encountering families experiencing financial hardship, domestic violence and other difficult circumstances. The church responded with food relief, counselling, discipleship and practical support. "We didn't want to just say that Jesus loves them," Maureen says. "We wanted to put it into action."

More than a decade later, that small beginning has grown into a vibrant multicultural church in Sydney's south-west.

In 2025, with support from Christian Finance, Rock Hosanna undertook a significant renovation. “They had the vision also that we had for the church, because it’s never about what we want. It’s about what God wants to do to advance His kingdom.” Maureen says.

Today, there is more room for worship, more room for children and more room to welcome the community.

For generations, the old Coats Patons woollen mill was part of the industrial heartbeat of Launceston, Tasmania. At its peak, the mill employed more than 2,100 people and formed part of an international textile business operating across 17 countries. But by 1997, the doors had closed. What had once been a thriving centre of activity was left empty. For many, the story might have ended there. But Door of Hope Christian Church saw something different.

It was a bold move of faith, not simply to occupy an old building, but to reimagine it.

The 40,000-square-metre site now houses a broad ecosystem of ministries, services, community spaces and social enterprises. Alongside church services and ministry activities, the complex includes café and lounge spaces, childcare and outside school hours care, allied health services, conference facilities, storage, community organisations, small businesses and charitable initiatives.

Maida Vale is a peaceful community located in bushland about 16 kilometres from the Perth C*D and is home to Westminster Presbyterian Church (WPC) Maida Vale. With a history dating back to 1970, WPC Maida Vale first made contact with Baptist Financial Services (BFS) in 2019 when they were looking to build a new church building. What started in a garage with four families and 18 members in 2011 has led to the Burmese Chin Community of the Australia Zophei Church opening a brand new, state of the art building, in the western suburb of Melbourne, Ravenhall.

On Friday 22 March 2024, we gathered together at Sydney Opera House to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Baptist Financial Services (BFS).

Over the past 40 years, BFS has loaned over $750 million to fund ministries, schools, and churches right across Australia and has supported and worked with over 1500 churches and ministries during that time.

BFS CEO David Slinn said that the evening was a wonderful celebration of the goodness and faithfulness of God.

“It’s amazing to look back over the achievements of four decades of our ministry and see the impact through God’s grace and provision we have made in the world.”

“What’s most exciting has been BFS’s capacity to sow back into kingdom work, with BFS distributing over $30 million to Christian organisations and ministries in grants and sponsorships since inception.”

Congratulations to the team at Ebenezer Pentecostal Assembly, Adelaide, who late last year realised a 14-year-old dream of owning their own church building.

The Malayalam Pentecostal community originally from Kerala, India, utilised their skills and talents over 48 days of renovation to see the project complete.

Isn’t it great to see God’s people working together and the local church and its ministry flourishing.
