Did you know that no matter whether you earn $45,000 and your best friend earns $245,000, most of us tend to spend our full income - AND MORE!
This is usually because of 2 main reasons –
1) Many people are struggling to live week to week, and have spent all their income by the time they get paid.
They haven’t accounted for the fact that larger regular bills such as insurances, rates, electricity bill, etc need to have an allocation set aside out of every pay, so that the correct amount is available when the expense is due.
Therefore, when these large bills arrive, they don’t have any money left to pay the bill.
2) For those who DO prepare a budget, they usually average out how much is needed to cover all expenses, but they do not realise that timing of when the expenses fall due will then become an issue.
For instance, for their annual car registration of $780, people will set aside $15pw (52 x $15 = $780). This expense will be covered if it has just been paid and isn’t due again for another 12 months, but what happens when the registration is due in 2 month’s time?
There won’t be enough money set aside in 2 months to pay the bill. There will only be 8 weeks x $15 = $120 set aside.
So for many reasons, budgeting fails – and the main reason is because we haven’t factored in Timing - when the expense is due.
The solution lies in having the ability to forecast into the future, and know well ahead of time how to factor in exactly how much is needed in our bank account TODAY to be able to pay this registration expense.
The same applies for every one of your expenses – rent/mortgage, electricity, phone bill, rates, insurances, daycare fees.
When you have 10, 15 or 20 regular expenses, it can be extremely difficult to manually keep track of whether or not you will have enough to pay them all on time, just using a budget.
A Spending Plan addresses both the Timing issue and the issue of how to have enough money set aside so all bills will be paid on time.
