Some of Australia’s miners are set to return to their normal fly-in fly-out rosters, as coronavirus infections remain low particularly in those transitioning between Western Australia and Queensland.

In March some rosters for FIFO workers were doubled, some even tripled to reduce the travelling risk involved with flying during the COVID-19 pandemic. This left some miners away from their interstate families for months.

Mining engineers appear to be the most sought after due to a skills shortage from low enrolments at a university level over the last few years.

The Future of Work: the Changing Skills Landscape for Miners report by the Minerals Council of Australia says there have been a 67% decrease in mining engineering enrolments compared to eight years ago.

This is also combined with many skilled workers approaching retirement age and a large increase in technology changes in the industry is driving demand higher.

Working on a mine site can be risky business. Despite significant improvements in health and safety over the last 10 years, the mining industry still has one of the highest rates of fatalities of any industry.

Common risks include body stress, manual handling, slips and falls, being hit by moving objects or machinery and working with high-risk plant.

And now with the impending threat of COVID-19, there is extra pressure to ensure the safety of your team on site.

Western Australia is set to streamline administrative procedures to encourage more individuals and businesses to use government online services.

Reports state that WA’s Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) will accept electronic signatures on documents which are not required to be witnessed or sworn, with other tenement-related documents to be emailed where possible.
