June interest rate announcement: at record low of 0.1 per cent RBA holds cash rate
The Reserve Bank of Australia agreed, at its monthly meeting on June 1, to maintain the cash rate at its record low of 0.10 per cent.
The move comes as consumer confidence dipped from its 11-year high in May but remains very strong. The largest falls are from Victoria, Western Australia, and Queensland, while NSW continues to be the most confident about the post-pandemic economic recovery.
“The Reserve Bank won’t want change any time soon,” said Chris Lioutas, chief investment officer with PSK Financial. “They’ll be watching the data closely,especially with everyone worried about inflation at the moment and over-reacting to the possibility.”
“We’ll get spikes of inflation in the short term with supply shortages happening, either with labour or goods and services, and the US has a seen a 0.9 per cent rate last month which overshot expectations, and the Bank has flagged they’d like to see a rise here. But we’re still well below inflation targets, so it’s all watch and see.”

Residential Property Market Quadruples Australian GDP

Following a surge in values, residential real estate in Australia is now worth more than $8 trillion, which is approximately four times the size of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).According to property data and analytics company CoreLogic, the total value of home dwellings now totals $8.1 trillion.

“The Australian dwelling market has reached fresh record highs for the past four months, but the end of April marked the first time the total value of Australian housing broke the $8-trillion mark,” said CoreLogic’s head of research, Eliza Owen. “This puts Australian residential property at around $1 trillion more than the combined value of the ASX, superannuation and commercial real estate stock combined,” she said.

Home Values Continue To Increase

General market confidence remains high as the rollout of the Covid vaccine gathers momentum. CoreLogic pointed to a 0.5% growth in combined capital city values over the week ended 9 May 2021. Sydney lead the way with a rise of 0.7%, followed by Adelaide and Melbourne at 0.4%, with Brisbane and Perth both at 0.3%.

Year-to-date changes show Sydney continuing to widen the gap from other capital cities with a rise of 10.2%. Next comes Brisbane with a 7.0% year-to-date increase followed by Melbourne with 6.8%, Perth with 6.2% and Adelaide with 5.8%.
