A few weeks ago, I realised I'd let one of my own routines slip. I'd been going to the gym twice a week, then I got sick, EOFY got busy and suddenly six weeks had passed.

It got me thinking about another routine I'm pretty attached to: my weekly money check-in.

For me, that means making my Profit First allocations, reconciling the previous week's bookkeeping, checking what's coming up, paying wages and bills, and making sure I know what's sitting in each account.

The best part is knowing it's taken care of. I don't have bills floating around in the back of my mind or a pile of bookkeeping I'm trying not to think about.

But it's surprisingly easy for a good financial habit to slip. You miss one week because things are busy. Then something else becomes more urgent. Before you know it, the bookkeeping hasn't been looked at for weeks and you're wondering where to even start.

The answer is simpler than you might think.... Start again.
Your money check-in might be Monday morning, Friday afternoon or half an hour with a coffee and Xero on a Wednesday. The day doesn't matter. What matters is having a regular time to stop, look at the numbers and make the decisions your business needs you to make.

Those little routines are often what stop the bigger financial jobs from becoming overwhelming.

If your money routine has slipped lately, pick it back up this week. Even 30 minutes is a start.

When cashflow gets tighter, it’s tempting to look at every expense and think, “What can I cut?” But an expense review isn't about cutting everything possible. It’s about making sure your money is being spent with purpose.

Before you cut a cost, ask:

For seasonal businesses, timing can matter just as much as the expense itself.

You can’t plant something and then ignore it for six months before wondering why it hasn’t grown the way you hoped.

Your money needs regular attention too, and especially in a rural business, it needs to work with the seasons you’re actually dealing with.

What would you do differently if you knew exactly where your money was going?

Would you make that investment you’ve been putting off? Pay yourself more consistently?Feel more comfortable heading into the quieter months? Or maybe just stop second-guessing every decision you make with your money.

For a lot of business owners, having a better handle on the numbers isn’t about becoming obsessed with spreadsheets. It’s about knowing what you can afford, spotting problems earlier and making decisions without constantly wondering if you’ve got it wrong.

That’s the difference good financial visibility can make.

I love a good sales target. But “we need to make more money this year” isn’t really a plan. Especially if you’re going to spend most of that extra revenue making the sales happen.

Try working backwards instead.

How much profit do you actually want the business to make?
What do you want to be able to pay yourself?
What does the business need to cover along the way?

Then you can work out what your sales need to look like.

More sales is nice. More money actually staying in the business is better.

Before Nourish Your Numbers, before becoming a Profit First Professional and before I spent my days helping other businesses with their numbers, I was running a small farm and free-range egg business in Kingston SE while raising young kids.

From the outside, we were working hard and making money.

Behind the scenes, things were a little different.

Income was seasonal, bills still needed paying and there were plenty of times I wondered how far the money was going to stretch.

Later, working in admin and finance at a mechanic’s workshop, I started seeing the same thing happening with other regional business owners. They were working incredibly hard, but getting the right financial support wasn’t always easy.

That experience has stayed with me. It’s a big part of why I do what I do today.
