$550,000 home loan over 30 years:

1. If you pay minimum repayments, it will be in year 20 when the principal payment is more than your interest costs. Up until 19 years, most of the repayments are going towards interest. It will take you exactly 30 years to pay off the mortgage.

2. If you pay only $500 extra per month, your principal payment will win the interest on year 11. Overall you will pay off your mortgage in 21 years in this scenario. You will save circa $200,000 in total interest.
