Seafood has never been more available and delicious in Australia. It is a staple at many Christmas lunches – how do you serve yours?

Maxima the Opportunity Group Managing Director John Hutton says, “freshly shucked with a squeeze of lemon is the best way to enjoy a good quality oyster – it should give you a Christmas tingle.”

Our current trials in the north west could bring WA-grown tropical rock oysters to dinner tables around Australia, and the world, in just a few years!

Did you know a pearl oyster can produce more than one pearl in its lifetime? Our director and pearl technician Melanie Carrington is one of very few people in Australia who is trained to perform this intricate operation!

Mel was formally trained by Japanese pearl seeding technicians, widely regarded as the best in the world, for many years to achieve this specialised skilled. She is now a highly sought-after technician, working with some of the biggest growers of cultured pearls.

Living in Broome, the pearling capital of Australia, Mel has a strong connection to the Kimberley region, where she grew up and now lives with her husband and four children.

She is an integral part of the management and leadership of our business and brings invaluable technical skills and knowledge from her more than 30 years in the pearling industry.

How it started vs. How it’s going…

Welcome to our aquaculture hub on Turtle Island in Cone Bay, Western Australia.

In the late 1980’s when our pearling business started there wasn’t much on the island and our team would sleep in swags and caravans while managing the pearl farm (can you imagine that in the Kimberley heat?)

Today we have a multi-species aquaculture hub for pearling, barramundi farming and new species development such as tropical rock oyster and tropical rock lobster, plus airconditioned, modern accommodation for our workers.

While the infrastructure has certainly changed, one thing hasn’t, and that’s our respect and care for the beautiful environment in which we work (oh, and the sunsets!)

Join us as we take some newly seeded pearl oysters to our Cone Bay pearl farm in the Kimberley.

During this trip, our crew took the opportunity to conduct some routine maintenance on the pearling marker buoys and the longlines at the farm. They then placed the seeded pearl oysters in their panels and into the water where they will be looked after for the next two years while the pearls grow.

Cone Bay is well known for producing top quality pearls, and the anticipation of how the pearls will grow in the upcoming season is always an exciting time for our team. Now the waiting game begins!

The future of aquaculture in WA is bright. It was great to be with our industry friends and colleagues on Friday for the annual Aquaculture Council of WA meeting to celebrate the year and look to the opportunities that lie ahead.

It was great to hear from Minister for Fisheries Don Punch about the opportunity to further develop the industry to capitalise on growing demand for fresh, locally produced seafood.

Maxima the Opportunity Group General Manager Steven Gill will continue his role as an ACWA Board member in 2023, along with new members Nathan Boothman, Chris De Cuyper, Mathew Skye and Alastair Smart.

“I acknowledge the enormous effort of outgoing board members, Steven Davies, Craig Kessel, Andrew Matthews and Kian Rex,” Steven said.

“They each contributed a great deal of time, effort and passion to lead our peak industry body and have placed us in a great position to continue to be a strong voice for WA’s aquaculture businesses.”

How was your commute today? Our research officer Wal had a particularly bumpy ride to work last week 🌊 🌊

Wal was heading out to our oyster farm in Flying Foam Passage in the Pilbara as part of our routine maintenance and monitoring program.

Luckily, Wal and his crew are highly experienced and well equipped for these types of conditions, and it just made for an uncomfortable and slow trip to and from the farm that day.

Our team won’t hesitate to call off a trip due to poor weather. We understand it’s all part of working with Mother Nature – we rely on the ocean to grow our oysters and sometimes we just need to ride the waves of the day.

We send our deepest sympathies to the Mowanjum mob following the passing of our dear friends and Elders, Mr D Woolagoodja and Mrs J Oobagooma.

More than 35 years ago, with their support and permission to access country, the Maxima Pearling venture began. Many members of the community went on to work on the pearl farm and we can all say we are joined part as a Cone Bay family.

We are eternally grateful for their generosity in sharing their cultural knowledge and stories from the land. Through our interactions, we developed a greater understanding of how to meaningfully engage with First Nation’s people and how to respectfully create opportunities from the saltwater country.

Our commitment to seeking and creating opportunities for First Nation’s people to work on their traditional land is guided by the lessons imparted by the Mowanjum Elders will continue to shape our future.

Is there anything better than a glass off? ☀️

“On days like this, it feels like the ocean is giving us a free ride. There’s a distinct noise the boat makes when it is this smooth that instantly puts you in a good mood,” said Maxima Research Officer Warren Ure.

This picturesque day was en route to collect some oysters from the trial farm off the Goulburn Islands in the Northern Territory earlier this month, with farm manager Brando Westley.

These conditions provided excellent visibility making inspecting the submerged baskets safe, easy and very enjoyable!

Surrounded by the best in the biz this week!

Maxima the Opportunity Group General Manager Steven Gill has been in Canberra this week with graduates of the Australian Rural Leadership program to consider the challenges and opportunities facing the fisheries and aquaculture industry over the next decade.

"It was a really great opportunity to reconnect with industry leaders as we pursue sustainable and innovative aquaculture development across Australia. We shared knowledge and ideas, and also reflected on our own personal leadership styles," Steven said.

Thanks to FRDC for supporting the program!

Great to be at the season opener for the City of Perth SLSC on the weekend, a club we're proud to be supporting as a Major Sponsor.

Maxima The Opportunity Group joined the club as a Foundation Supporter of the club's major facility redevelopment in 2014. Since completion of the redevelopment, the club’s annual revenue has increased by more than 100 per cent and membership has grown more than 40 per cent. This has enabled the club to purchase more life-saving equipment to keep our beaches and community safe, what a great outcome!

A major part of our business revolves around water, so we understand the importance of water safety and respect for the ocean. We are proud of this investment in the community and look forward to another great year ahead.

What a privilege to visit the Warruwi Community on Goulburn Island in the Northern Territory to check out their tropical rock oyster grow out trial.

Maxima The Opportunity Group Research Officer Warren Ure shared experiences from our trials in the Pilbara and Kimberley, and learnt more about economic opportunities for Traditional Owners in aquaculture.

Thanks to Mat Osbourne from NT DPI and Bunug Galaminda Yagbani Aboriginal Corporation for bringing such a motivated and passionate group of aquaculture experts and workers together, we look forward to continuing to share knowledge and create opportunities in aquaculture for First Nation’s people.
