I no longer pretend to be ok on R U OK Day.

R u ok day means every year - tomorrow is the day a piece of me was taken 16 years ago when my daughter Marley was born sleeping. After months of obstetric trauma, and fighting against something even the best medical care available couldn’t beat - I had to say goodbye. I mean forcibly had the choice made for me to “preserve maternal life”. I was wilfully trying to leave with her because staying was incomprehensible. But despite my best efforts; the efforts of the Maternal Fetal Medicine team were more effective at keeping me alive.

Two weeks after her passing I returned to work - because I was a worker. It’s how I Identified. I’d been working through a really tough pregnancy where not only did I have a gravely ill baby inside - I was also grossly unwell from the second I fell pregnant with her. But I still showed up 3 days a week to sell and finance cars from 8am to 5.30pm. The other days I cared for my toddler and 8 year old daughter and did the books for my husbands business.

In a haze of grief I showed up ready to avoid my pain by throwing myself into work. After a brief plattitide by my boss who I highly respected, he kindly reminded me it was I was for the best because children with disabilities are incredibly hard to raise. I was informed at 9am on my 1st day back that if I was prepared to come back full time again (6 days per week - 9 hours a day) - I had a position. However if not I did not have a job anymore. I stood up and shook their a hand and thanked them for the years id dedicated there.

On my drive home - there were suddenly more telegraph poles than usual. More areas I could just slip off the road. I was no use to the world anymore.

The following years it’s always been the weeks leading up to her birthday that were the hardest. As everyday is an acute recollection of what happened that date. As I got sicker and she got further from the chance of life outside my body.

Two years ago I finally was able to bring myself to allow her ashes to be scattered. At our favourite beach - by my other children and their dad. As I sat on the rocks; they paddled out - an entire family of dolphins came from nowhere and around the rocks past me and spent the next while swimming around my family as they let their daughter and sister to rest. As her ashes made their way out to sea - the dolphins shepherded her. It’s an experience you cannot make up

Why is this a post for a business page? Because I’ve been able to tell the people I have aligned with why I won’t be working tomorrow. I am able to speak about my daughter, without having to pretend.

We have come a long way in 16 years.

This year I don’t have my companion of 14 years Indie, who I lost a couple of months ago, but I know I will be held and loved anyway.

6 weeks ago I walked into my home office to greet my dogs and begin work.

They spend much of the day in there with me, in particular my sidekick Indie whos been my confidant for 13 years. She’s seen me through trauma, heartache, physical challenges and recoveries; she was right there always through every changing season of my life. Whilst I was made aware all the time that 10 was old for a bull Arab so Indie being 14 and having been on heart meds for 4 years ( never showed signs of progressing). She was as deaf as a door k**b and her eye sight was going. For the last 6 months She VERY begrudgingly had to be lifted into the Ute canopy I had made especially for my two dogs so they both had sliding windows to have their heads out.
She saved my life both figuratively and literally.

She knew.
Always. - and was there.

When I found her still warm but lifeless body lying in her bed that morning - I screamed and begged. Just the night before she’d been bounding around like a puppy as usual.

Over the last year I’ve had to put her away of I’ll be on the ride on for a long time because she’d be right next to me. All day of if I was.

My kids don’t remember a life before her.

She left the way she lived - on her own terms and protecting me from a decision she knew it would kill me to make.

A necropsy determined her heart just stopped. Her heart was in worse shape than she indicated and she didn’t wake from her sleep.

She sits in the centre of the house and when I was asked to write something for the tag. There was only one thing suitable

I’ve spent the last month grieving for my absolute closest companion.

During this time - it’s been all hands on deck at work to try to assist as many first home owners as possible to not miss out on a scheme that was due to end June 30.

In the quiet moments - the grief is heavy as it leaves my body in a wave of tears

But in the chaos of work hyper focus I have guided (read - busted my@rse) for 15 people to navigate 3 different Govt schemes enabling them to meet their goal of home ownership. I’ve assisted a client who was part of the VHF scheme since 2020 - re structure their loan and be able to pay out the govt equity and now be the sole beneficiaries of their increasing asset - whilst improving their payment.
Worked with a complicated scenario to have a young man who’s turned his life around in recent years, be able to purchase his dream home with his partner.
Assisted and educated people on savings plans, short and long term goals around better positioning themselves for home ownership.

We’ve hustled to meet tight finance clauses, short settlements timeframes, settlement due in QLD during the cyclone - with an embargo on Insurance up until 24 hours before settlement.

Relocated a family back to the local area to be closer to their aging parents AND saved them a substantial amount of money switching to us.

A fellow mortgage broker who hasn’t done much asset or personal lending reached out to ask me if I could assist with some long time clients of hers.
Scenario -
Father would like to purchase and build a pergola / shed where he, his partner and adult child live.
The challenge - the property and mortgage are in sons name as it’s his property. However father would like to contribute and cover the costs of the shed as a contribution.
Estimated funds required - $50k. One current vehicle loan to that’s been paid down from $64k to just 16k in 3 1/3 years - a year ahead of schedule. Client would also like to be able to make extra repayments to reduce the term and interest on the loan. However wanted reasonable payments while he continues to pay double on the vehicle - aiming to have it paid off by the end of the year. Then he will double up the personal loan repayment.
Client shows great financial discipline.
The solution - a competitive unsecured personal loan over a 7 year term with MoneyPlace - zero early payout fees, no monthly fees and interest calculated daily on the balance.
Client was very comfortable financially with the two repayments.
Why did I choose not to make it a secured loan, consolidate the vehicle loan and use the vehicle as security? Great question. Let me tell you
* Because the small amount of Saving on the interest rate was negated with -
* The extra time and hurdles - ie vehicle payout letter from financier, vehicle Inspection. None of which the client was keen on
* The higher establishment fee for secured loans with this lender
* His comprehensive insurance should become cheaper once he’s paid out the car at the end of the year
*I’d be re adding interest to and asset / loan he’s already paid interest on and has now amortised to be really just principal left.
*The overall financial and time cost to my client far outweighed any benefit. (Both were of course presented with my recommendation being accepted

Like this Scenario:

Client has a current vehicle loan for a family car that’s been giving them substantial mechanical issues and need to upgrade urgently.

The complications?
* Payout nearly $15,000
* Vehicle value from $0 to $5,000
* an uncertainty about what replacement vehicle they’d like.
* Time sensitive because they need a reliable vehicle for their family

Solution:
Unsecured personal loan that fits nicely with their goals, objectives and current payments. A super competitive rate that will payout their vehicle finance and provide with the freedom to choose the right car FOR THEM and not being forced to buy a car they don’t really want - under contraints of finance. It’ll also allow them some breathing room to decide what’s best for the sale of their current vehicle.
