he’s the rundown on concessional contributions and also non-concessional contributions the two main ways for people to get money into their Superannuation. As always this is general advice and if you’ve got more complex scenarios where you need to get a lot of money into Superannuation or looking to reduce large capital gains I recommend that you seek financial advice. # # # # #

This is a common question, and yes I know I said question far too often in the first 10 seconds of this video. But what you should be asking is where is your money invested within your current superannuation fund. All funds have very similar options in terms of the way that you can invest. This video explains the difference in the way your money can be invested and what to expect from a return point of view and also from a volatility point of view. When I use the word volatility this is the market going up and down as investors, fear and greed drives the market in the short term. These are things you need to understand to be successful as a long-term investor or also do you understand that looking at your portfolio constantly is of no benefit and you should concentrate on doing fun things. General advice only.

Self-managed Superannuation funds are fantastic structure to really understand where your money is invested and why, to have strategic control of your assets and the way they are allocated for the members benefit. But they are definitely not a one size fit all, they come with less protection, they come with more obligation such as an annual tax return and audit. And whether they are cheaper to run depends on the way the money is invested. In the past we would set them up for access to international shares, but that’s no longer required as technology has improved and we can access the world share markets via rap accounts such as Netwealth or hub24. Self managed superannuation fund benefit from critical mass so for larger benefits there is cost savings, but this depends on the way you’ve invested. As always this is general advice only. # # # # #

Good financial advice isn’t just about where your money is invested. It’s also about superannuation, estate planning, education and having the confidence to spend more on the things you enjoy, while you’re young and healthy enough to do them.

I get asked this one a lot. If you’re sitting on cash waiting for the market to fall, how do you know when it’s actually time to buy? That’s where things get tricky. If you're sitting on cash waiting for the “right” crash, timing the market can be much harder than it looks.

Is there really a “best time” to enter the market? The answer isn’t quite as straightforward as “time in the market, not timing the market”. Especially when there’s a lot of money on the line. I share my thoughts in this reel.

I’ve often had people compare their previous investment returns whether that’s in their superannuation or other entity with that of their mortgage on their home loans. And for me this is not the way to assess where you should be giving your preferences as we are talking about past returns up against a guaranteed future interest saving. I understand that everyone is after the answer but nothing is ever black or white as making concessional contributions and paying 15% as opposed to your marginal tax rate will always make more sense than paying off your home loan with after tax money. As always this is general advice on a recommend you seek personal financial advice.

As a first home buyer, it can be tempting to focus on getting into the property market with the smallest deposit possible. But personally, i’d rather take the time to build a stronger financial foundation before making such a big commitment.

very common question I receive is “what do you think the markets are going to do over the coming years?” and the honest answer is I have no idea over the short-term share markets will be dictated by fear and greed of irrational investors buying in at the top and panicking at the bottom. Over the long term I could definitely answer this with more confidence because businesses are ran by people working hard to make their products and services better. Businesses are driven by human endeavour, constantly making effort to improve. This is something that I can confidently say will boost the quality of their price and services increase their sales and therefore revenue and profitability and this is what we drive evaluations over the long-term. As investors we need to understand what drives markets in the short term and the long-term and know how to behave particularly in the short-term. This is all about understanding sharemarket volatility and how to behave at the best and worst of times. General advice only.

it’s always been a hard self for me to encourage people to put extra money into Superannuation compared to extra money in their home loans and that’s because we’ve been conditioned to be debt free which I am all for. However, the tax benefits of Superannuation and compounding returns over the long-term add so much value we shouldn’t ignore it. As always, I’ve build a calculator to help prove the numbers and show people why it works. Sorry this Calculator is not available as we use this in the office for our clients. General advice only.
