Most people think finance is about borrowing money. I don’t.

Over the years, I’ve found that the best outcome isn’t always a bigger loan or even a new loan.

Sometimes it’s restructuring existing facilities, improving cash flow, reducing repayments or simply helping someone understand the options available to them.

That’s why the first question I ask isn’t, “How much do you want to borrow?”

It’s:

“What are you actually trying to achieve?”

Once you understand the goal, the right finance solution often becomes much clearer.

Whether you’re looking to grow your business, upgrade equipment, purchase a vehicle or simply review your existing finance arrangements, it starts with a conversation — not an application.

If you employ under-18s, watch this one. 👀

Labor’s national conference has voted unanimously to add compulsory super for all under-18 workers to the party platform — removing the current rule that they must work more than 30 hours in a week to qualify.

To be clear: this is not law. The 30-hour threshold still applies today. Conference motions become binding party policy, but how and when they’re implemented is up to Labor’s parliamentary team.

If it does go through, the businesses that feel it are the ones with junior-heavy rosters — cafés, retail, fast food, hospitality. It’s 12% on wages that currently attract no super at all. Industry estimates put the number of affected workers at more than half a million.

Layer that on top of payday super, which started 1 July and already moved super from quarterly to every pay run, and the working capital picture for those businesses looks quite different to last financial year.

Nothing to action today. But if your roster is mostly juniors and part-timers, it’s worth modelling now rather than in the quarter it lands — and worth having a facility in place while your numbers still look good.

📊 RBA Watch: Rates Steady at 4.35%

The Reserve Bank has held the cash rate since June — its first pause after three hikes earlier this year — but hasn’t ruled out another move if inflation doesn’t ease.

The next decision lands 11 August.

What does this mean if you’re running a business? Credit is still readily available to both households and businesses — but conditions won’t stay this settled forever.
