Teams and Team Roles in the Age of AI:

Our MD Talan Miller recently presented with this topic at the AITD (Australian Institute of Training and Development) National Conference in Brisbane.

While we’re not quite at the Hollywood-style “Terminator: Rise of the Machines” scenario just yet, the rapid rise of AI is changing how teams work, communicate, and make decisions.

Our view is that this makes distinctly human capabilities, or ‘Human Superpowers’, more important than ever.

The human “superpowers” that AI still struggles to genuinely replicate, behavioural self-awareness, judgement, adaptability, trust-building, creativity, empathy, ethical decision-making, and contextual leadership - will become increasingly valuable in the years ahead.

To thrive in the Age of AI, teams may actually need to become more human, not less. This is the core theme, the “gist” of the presentation linked below that was presented at AITD:

Only a couple of weeks to go until the AITD (Australian Institute of Training and Development) National Conference in Brisbane.

A great event for leaders and professionals working with L&D, HR, OD and anyone curious about current ideas and innovations in working with people, training and development. Sabre and Belbin are honoured to have our MD speaking at the conference on the topic of 'Teams and Team Roles in the Age of AI'. Looking forward to it.

As some may know, from time to time several of the ex-military members of the Sabre team step into the film and television industry, working as military advisors and armourers. A great way to apply those backgrounds, and the teaming skills, in a completely different environment with one our side ventures.

Last night we had the pleasure of attending a premiere screening of a project we were involved in, 7 Snipers, a very cool Australian-made film with an international cast including Tim Roth, Radha Mitchell and Ioan Gruffudd.
The film opens across Australia in cinemas on the 30th of April, with international release to follow. It’s great to see Australian productions gaining this level of attention both locally and overseas.

Fen and Joey are pictured here on set in late 2024, working hard and, at least occasionally, enjoying a taste of the Hollywood life with a very nice cast and crew 😊 Now back to the day jobs until the next big movie project kicks off.

The Three Layers of Team Building: Aligning Budgets, Expectations and Outcomes

Team building does come in many different shapes and sizes—from a casual afternoon of games to the deep-dive development workshops.

One of the most common pitfalls in team building is a potentially disastrous mismatch between expectations, budgets, and the actual outcomes that different styles of team building can realistically deliver.

Understanding the three layers of team building sophistication is critical for organisations wanting to maximise ROI from the spend and avoid disappointment or lasting harm to team dynamics and relationships.

SELF-AWARENESS IS THE KEY TO REAL TEAM BUILDING:

High-performing teams don’t emerge by accident. They are intentionally developed and built on individuals who understand not only what they do, but how they do it, and the impact that has on others. Self-Awareness is now a crucial part of the team building process.

In the world of team building and team development, self-awareness is often treated as a “nice to have.”

In reality, it is one of the most critical ingredients for sustained team performance, certainly even more so now in the age of AI.

At its core, self-awareness is about understanding your behavioural contribution at work: your strengths, your tendencies, and the ways in which your approach can both support and unintentionally hinder others.

When this level of behavioural awareness exists across a team, the difference is immediate and measurable.

SELF-AWARENESS - From individuals to teams how self-awareness scales:

High-performing teams don’t just happen without putting in the work. They are built on individuals who understand themselves, and how their behaviour at work impacts others.

Self-awareness is not just a personal strength. It’s a definite team advantage.

The most effective teams are made up of people who:

🟢 Understand how they work at their best, and the conditions where they add the greatest value
🟢 Recognise where their behaviours might create friction, and actively manage it
🟢 Communicate their needs, preferences, and boundaries clearly, reducing confusion, duplication, and rework

When individuals can clearly articulate their strengths and limitations in an evidence-based way, something powerful happens.

They seek out complementary contributions from others.

They structure work more intelligently.

They address risks and tensions early before they escalate into bigger issues.

In short, they make teamwork work.

But here’s the challenge…

Our analysis of over 78,000 Belbin Team Role Model profiles across more than 30 countries shows that only 17.7% of people are truly self-aware.
That’s a surprisingly small number, and a significant opportunity.

Because if self-awareness is rare at the individual level, it’s even rarer at the team level… unless it’s developed deliberately.

So the question becomes:

👉 How self-aware are you?
👉 How self-aware is your team?
👉 And importantly — how would you know?

How ‘Self-Aware’ are People in the Workplace?

We’ve done the research.

We analysed a dataset of more than 78,000 recent individual Belbin profiles across over 30 countries. The findings are clear: people in the workplace are not as self-aware of their behaviour as we might like to believe.

This aligns with broader research into self-awareness, which suggests the same pattern.

Within Belbin, we compare Self-Perception data with feedback from four or more workplace Observers. From this, profiles are classified along a spectrum, from Coherent, where there is strong alignment between self and observer views, through Compatible, where recognisable patterns exist, to Discordant, where there are significant differences, and finally Confused, where little or no clear pattern can be identified.

Our analysis revealed that only 17.7% of individuals had a Coherent profile that would indicate a high level of self-awareness.

In other words, despite the critical role self-awareness plays in personal effectiveness, leadership success, and team performance, genuinely high levels of self-awareness are relatively rare.

So, how self-aware are you? And how self-aware are your leaders?

If you’d like to learn more about our research—and how we can help individuals, teams, and leaders build greater self-awareness—please get in touch.
