For the sixth consecutive meeting, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) held the cash rate steady at 4.35%.

Market commentators had largely predicted this, particularly following the latest quarterly consumer price index results which showed an increase of 3.8% in the June 2024 quarter, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Although this is up when compared to the 3.6% increase in the March quarter, the result aligns with the RBA’s forecasts.

Recently, RBA governor Michele Bullock said the economy was in a difficult place where demand was still too high. She said the RBA was balancing the fact that demand was still too strong with the fact that monetary policy acts with a lag.

She also said that Australia was not seeing the same progress on inflation as other economies.

As a result, she said the economy was at a difficult point and the RBA would remain vigilant.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) left the cash rate unchanged at 4.35% following its June monetary policy meeting.

This marks the fifth consecutive meeting at which the cash rate has been held since the last increase in November 2023.

The decision comes as the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that monthly annualised inflation rose in April 2024 by 3.6%, up from 3.5% in March.

Recently, RBA governor Michele Bullock said the central bank is doing what it can to prevent high inflation from taking hold. Higher interest rates have been working to stabilise the economy but there are still indications of excess demand which, coupled with the tight labour market, means the economic outlook remains uncertain.

Stamp duty for first home buyers will soon be cheaper in Queensland 🎉

The policy, announced Sunday, will see first home buyers receive concessions on transfer duties for properties valued up to $700,000, up from the previous $500,000.

The threshold for concessions will also rise, on vacant land valued up to $350,000, from $250,000.

The Queensland government has added lower transfer costs for some first home buyers to its list of budget sweeteners as competition heats up for votes in October’s election.

The government said the change would save some eligible home buyers as much as $17,000 dollars, with the figure varying according to the value of the home or land.

The cash rate will remain at 4.35% following the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) March monetary policy meeting.

The decision was largely expected, as the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed annual trimmed mean inflation fell to 3.8% in January, down from 4.0% in December.

While higher interest rates appear to be having the desired effect on the economy, RBA governor Michele Bullock reiterated the RBA’s commitment to return the cash rate to within its target range of 2-3%.
