The most expensive financial decision isn’t always a bad investment.
Sometimes it’s doing nothing.
Not because doing nothing costs you money today.
Because it costs you options tomorrow.
Every year you delay retirement planning.
Every year you delay reducing debt.
Every year you delay investing.
Every year you delay getting clarity.
You’re reducing future choices.
What’s interesting is most people aren’t making a decision.
They’re waiting to make one.
Waiting until next year.
Waiting until rates fall.
Waiting until life settles down.
The problem?
Life rarely settles down.
The people who make the most progress aren’t necessarily the smartest.
They’re usually the ones who start before they feel ready.
Because clarity comes from action, not waiting.

One of the biggest retirement mistakes I see?
People obsessing over their super balance.
They tell me:
• I need $1 million.
• I need $2 million.
• I need more.
But here’s the problem.
A super balance is just a number.
What really matters is the lifestyle and income that number can support.
I’ve met people with more money than they’ll ever need who still worry about retirement.
And I’ve met people with less who are completely comfortable.
The difference isn’t usually the balance.
It’s the clarity.
Do you know:
✅ What retirement will actually cost?
✅ How much income you’ll need?
✅ Whether you’re on track?
Because retirement confidence doesn’t come from having a bigger number.
It comes from understanding your number.
Not your super number.
Your lifestyle number.

1. Your mortgage determines most major decisions.
2. You’d like to work less but can’t.
3. You’d love to travel more but won’t.
4. Retirement feels further away than it should.
5. The mortgage feels heavier than the house feels exciting.

The debt isn’t the problem.
The lack of options is.

When can you retire?
Most people think it’s an age.
I think it’s a position.

A position where:
✅ Your assets support your lifestyle
✅ Your income supports your spending
✅ Work becomes a choice, not a necessity

That’s why we start with three questions:
WHEN do you want work to become optional?
WHAT does retirement actually look like?
WITH WHAT assets and income will you fund it?
Once you answer those questions, retirement becomes much less about guessing and much more about planning.

retirement isn’t about reaching a number.
It’s about reaching a point where you have a choice.

1. You don’t know your retirement number.
2. You wonder if you’re on track.
3. You check your super but don’t know what it means.
4. You worry about running out of money.
5. You’re unsure when work can become optional.
6. You haven’t modelled your retirement.
7. You’re hoping rather than knowing.

Retirement confidence doesn’t come from having more money.
It comes from having a plan 💰

Interest rates.
Fuel prices.
Groceries.
Property prices.
Bad news has a way of demanding your attention.
And if you’re not careful, it can start to dominate your thinking.
One of the biggest investments I’ve made over the last decade hasn’t been in shares, property or super.
It’s been investing in my mindset.

Because the reality is:
❌ You can’t control inflation
❌ You can’t control interest rates
❌ You can’t control tomorrow’s headlines

But you can control:
✅ Your attention
✅ Your behaviour
✅ Your preparation
✅ Your financial plan
I’ve found that the more attention I give to things I can control, the less power the things I can’t control tend to have.
Because where attention goes, energy flows.

Here’s a question.
What are you doing next Tuesday at 10am?
Most people know exactly where they’ll be.
At work.
In a meeting.
Answering emails.
Now imagine work became optional.
Where would you choose to be?
That’s why I’ve never thought retirement was about stopping work.
It’s about having a choice.
A choice over your Tuesday mornings.
Your time.
Your energy.
Your life.
Because true wealth isn’t having the biggest super balance.
It’s having the freedom to decide what your next Tuesday looks like.

So, if work became optional tomorrow... where would you be next Tuesday at 10am?

Imagine you’re 80 years old looking back on today.
What would your older self want for you?
Would it be:
✅ More weekends at work?
✅ More emails answered?
✅ More time worrying about things that never happened?
Or would it be:
✅ More memories with the people you love
✅ More experiences
✅ More time doing what matters
One of the reasons I think retirement planning is so important isn’t because of money.
It’s because money gives you options.
And options give you experiences.
Sometimes the best decision becomes obvious when you stop looking at life through today’s lens and start looking at it through the eyes of your future self.
Because one day, today will be a memory.

What would your 80-year-old self thank you for doing right now?

Property.
Shares.
Crypto.
Gold.
Silver.
Spend five minutes online and you’ll find someone convincing you their strategy is the best.
The problem?
Most people start with the investment before they’ve worked out what they’re trying to achieve.

A better question is:
✅ What are you trying to achieve?
✅ When do you want work to become optional?
✅ What level of risk are you comfortable with?

Because wealth isn’t built by finding the “perfect” investment.
It’s built by following a strategy you can stick with over the long term.
The best investment isn’t the one someone else tells you about.
It’s the one that helps you achieve your goals.

“One day.”
It’s a phrase I hear all the time.
One day we’ll travel.
One day we’ll buy the caravan.
One day we’ll slow down.
One day work won’t be so busy.
The problem?
One day has no date attached to it.
And before you know it, years have passed.
The people who live differently don’t usually wait for one day.
They put a date in the calendar.
They create a plan.
They start preparing before the opportunity arrives.
Because dreams are wonderful.
But plans are what bring them to life.

A question worth thinking about:
What have you been telling yourself you’ll do “one day”?
