If you’re buying tech in store this Black Friday (or any time of year), here’s my number one tip.
Open the box in store right after you buy it, in front of the sales rep, and quickly test that it works.
If you take it home and later find it’s dead on arrival or damaged, most stores will insist on sending it away for assessment before giving you a replacement. But if you open it in front of the sales rep and there’s an issue, they can usually replace it on the spot.
Story time: When I worked at a major Australian telco, a customer took his phone home and it wouldn’t charge. He brought it back and it ended up being sent away for repair for three weeks. If it had been tested in store, it could have been swapped instantly.
A ten-second check in store can save you weeks of frustration.
