As ‘tax time’ approaches, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced it will be taking a close look at 3 common errors being made by taxpayers:

1) Incorrectly claiming work-related expenses

2) Inflating claims for rental properties

3) Failing to include all income when lodging

To ensure all of the above are correctly disclosed and for all income sources to filter through to the ATO, it is recommended not rushing to get your returns done in the early days of July.

Here’s some things you can consider to execute before 30 June:

1) Pre pay expenses - pay for next years expenses before 30 June for things like rent, insurance, subscriptions and expense it this tax year.

2) Review your invoicing and debtors (those that owe you money) - if you can, delay invoicing clients or chasing unpaid money so that new invoices are raised and cash is received after 1 July.

3) Top up your Super. Remember to consider your appropriate contribution limits.

Remember, before making any decisions please consult your accountant or advisor.
