Today is a date I always remember.
On February 4th, 1985, I started working with ANZ, fresh from school as an 18yr old.
I never imagined leaving, it was once like a family, but 6 months ago I resigned.
2023 was a tumultuous year for me, both personally and professionally.
I took on a new role, but from early on it was clear that it wasn't working out, I wasn't feeling good enough, my mental health was at an all-time low and some days it was a struggle getting to the office.
I sought external help and make a decision to leave.
It was time to back myself, get my confidence back and believe that I was good enough.
It was a huge financial risk, but for the sake of my mental health, I had no choice.
I am not resentful, or regretful, I believe that all things happen for a reason and the last 6 months have been very liberating as I learn and adapt to being self-employed.
My wife Bronwyn is incredible, I owe her so much, she trusted me, she had faith in me and we are on this new ride together.
Thanks so much to my new team at AAP Finance, Tony Haworth, Lisa Holt and Anthony Ryan. They are incredibly supportive and encouraging, they help when they don't need to help and cheer on all the little wins along the way. They put up with my ramblings in the office and regular interruptions, some things never change.
The support of friends and family along this new journey is amazing. So many people have reached out, trusting me to look after their financial needs, giving me the encouragement at a time that I needed it the most.
When I left ANZ there were two senior people I remember, for very simple reasons, but it's these little things that leave a big impresssion.
Colin Law came to my farewell, he didn't need to, but he made the effort to come and made a farewell speech.
Ben Hewett, our State Manager at the time, called me on the day I resigned, he didn't need to either, but he thanked me on behalf of ANZ for the 38 years I put it.
A few little tips to share.
1) Be kind to each other.
2) Be kind to yourself.
3) It's never too late to do what you love.
4) Check on your work mates, don't assume your colleague that smiles and makes jokes a lot is doing ok.
I am grateful, for friends, family and the opportunities that lie ahead, as a fresh faced 57yr old.
