Proud to support Poppy’s Light Foundation at their second annual ball tomorrow 💫💫

She fainted after exercise.

She was 18.

We went to A&E.
She had an ECG.
We were reassured.
She was discharged.

No referral.

Two years later, she died.

Her name was Poppy. She was 20 years old.

She died from Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (CPVT), a rare inherited heart rhythm condition.

In the UK, around 12 young people die every week from undiagnosed cardiac conditions.

Many had already been seen by healthcare professionals.

This isn’t about blame.

It’s about recognising red flags.

Because inherited cardiac conditions can look deceptively ordinary:

A faint after exercise.
A dizzy episode.
A “panic attack”.
A seizure that isn’t quite a seizure.

And sometimes a normal ECG gives false reassurance.

But there is something simple that can help.

At Poppy’s Light Foundation, we developed a clinical prompt to help clinicians pause and ask the right questions.

The POPPY Check

P – Presenting with syncope or collapse
O – Occurring during or after exertion
P – Personal or family cardiac history
P – Potential inherited arrhythmia
Y – Yield to escalation, not reassurance

It takes seconds to remember.

But it could prevent a sudden cardiac death.
