This Saturday, 18 July, we're screening New Zealand film Tinā, a 2025 critically acclaimed drama directed by Miki Magasiva.

Tinā stars Anapela Polataivao as Mareta Percival, a grieving Samoan substitute teacher who loses her daughter in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. She takes a job at an elite, wealthy private school and uses choral music to connect with her students and heal.

Celebrated for bringing a uniquely Pasifika spin to the classic "underdog choir" genre, the film became one of the most successful local films in New Zealand cinema history.

Come along to Okines Community House at 6.30pm, enjoy a complimentary drink and shared food before our film starts at 7.00pm.

Vale Sam Neil ❤️

“Sam Neill was one of the finest actors *in the world*. He died today, at the age of 78.

He could play a male romantic lead as effortlessly as he could an arch villain or an abject weirdo.

He was so nuanced he could make you love him or fear him or burst out laughing without a single word - sometimes even without a movement.

Generations produce very few artists of his stature and now there is one less. Everything he ever made is to be treasured.

We are lucky he chose film and tv, so we may keep part of him forever.

Vale, you magnificent human. You great man. You gift.”

One of the most beloved actors in Hollywood, the late Sam Neill, has died aged 78. The Jurassic Park actor has been remembered as our "honorary Aussie" with a breadth of talent.

In a post on his official Instagram account, a statement said the “loss was sudden and unexpected”.

The post said he was surrounded by family when he died in Sydney’s St Vincent’s Private Hospital.

Neill first rose to fame in the 1977 film Sleeping Dogs, before going on to star in My Brilliant Career, Jurassic Park, The Piano and Possession among other films.

In late April, the Kiwi actor announced he was cancer-free, after a five-year battle with blood cancer.

The post said Neill “remained cancer-free”, and the family will share more information later.

On Saturday 20 June we're screening Slam (AUS MA15+ 116 mins), a 2018 Australian drama written and directed by Partho Sen-Gupta.
Lead character, Ricky Nasser, is a young Australian whose peaceful suburban life is turned upside down when his sister Ameena, a slam poet, disappears without a trace.
The film is an official Australian/French co-production with the main roles played by Adam Bakri and Rachael Blake. Legendary film critic David Stratton wrote that "Slam is very impressive: it tells an important story in a convincing and enthralling way" and gave the film 4/5 stars.

Starring Meryl Streep, Ann Hathaway and Stanley Tucci, the comedy drama is set in the world of high fashion. 20 years later, the sequel is now showing in cinemas.
