Alliance Leasing Director and Veteran Ian Lindgren Explains Why He Started a Novated Leasing Service for Veterans and Defence Personnel

We started our second company in 2005. It was a payroll company providing outsourced payroll services to IT contractors. At the time, I noticed an opportunity: employees understood that novated leasing saved money, and so did senior managers, but seeing it had just been introduced, very few people actually could describe how it worked in detail.
Therefore, when companies were selected to provide whole-of-Defence salary packaging, no one really knew how to check that everything was as advertised. It was difficult to ask the right questions: "What are all your fees and charges? How does it all work behind the glossy brochures distributed by the national novated leasing companies?"
The service experience also varied significantly between providers. Did someone pay the service centre on the day you had your car serviced so you were welcomed back next time, or did it take six weeks? For many providers, I found it took six weeks. This was significant because here in Canberra, I can walk into a service centre and have my car serviced, and the moment I say "Alliance Leasing," you receive a smile in return because they know we will pay for the service before I pick up my car that day.
So I wanted to ensure that people were actually achieving the savings they expected and receiving the ongoing care they deserved.
