In 2021 I bought a two bedroom unit in Tranmere, Adelaide, for $347,500. My deposit was $70,000, which felt small at the time compared to the three bedroom houses everyone else seemed to be buying.

Five years on, it’s worth $650,000. That’s $300,000 in equity I didn’t have when I signed. I still owe $100,000 on it, so if I sold tomorrow, before agent fees and selling costs, I’d walk away with $550,000.

I see so many first home buyers holding out for the perfect property in the perfect suburb, waiting for the number to feel right before they do anything.

A smaller unit, bought in the right suburb at the right price, will build more wealth than years of waiting for perfect ever will.
