Dear Customers and Clients and Gen Public,

*** STOP ASKING FOR VIETNAMESE D**G unless you're going to Vietnam that is .. ***

Please see the below post made on 09/07/2016 (i.e. : just over 4 years ago ..) :

Today's #1 Retail Interaction and Public Service Announcement :

Customer : "I bought this Vietnamese D**g a few days ago and it'll be worth more now so how much will I get ?" (He paid AU$2000 for VND 30 100 000 on the 1st of July 2016).

Me : "Aren't you going now ? Why are you changing it all back ? It won't have increased on the Buy side in only a couple of days."

Customer : "I'm not travelling there, someone said buy it because it's going to revalue and be worth a lot more .. so how much ?"

Me : "Ahhhhh .. did they tell you $2000 it would be worth AU$100 000 ?"

Customer : "No more."

Me : "How much more ?"

Customer : "Over $200 000".

Me : "So AU$2000 worth within the month would be worth 100 times that ?"

Customer : "Yes. They work at the World Bank and they told me this was a sure thing". ( ?!?!?! )

Me : *stares *eyebrows raised

Customer : "What ?"

Me : "Words like 'sure thing' and '100 times increase' didn't sound too good to be true ?"

Customer : "They know what they're talking about".

Me : "Blatantly. Because it's worth AU$1568.00 today .. $432 less than you paid. With no fees."

Customer : "Might take a little longer then".

Me : "I've been hearing this for 3 years now so I venture it won't .."

Customer : "Then why would they say it ?"

Me : "Honestly don't know, I can't tell who stands to gain in this con but it IS a con .. Currency is tied to an economy - in this case the Vietnamese economy, hardly a stalwart - and the International FX market. If a currency moved in value by 10 thousand percent against another in days then not only would the entire country fold in on itself but the world markets would be in dire straits)."

Customer : "What do I do with it then ?"

Me : "Either change it back to AU and cut your losses or go to Vietnam and get yourself $2000 worth of holiday ..."

Customer, not convinced : "I'll wait and see what happens".

Me : "Sure" (*sigh)

** NB : The above also applies to Iraqi Dinar.

It is feeling a little bit (more - er) grim lately ..

With the escalation of lockdown in Victoria and the update that international travel returning to 'normal' is now a 2024 (TWENTY TWENTY FOUR WHAAA' ?!) prediction.

Pant pant.

On behalf of all Atlas Currency Exchange management and staff we want to say stay safe, think positive, get some sun, plan and dream cos the world will open again and we will appreciate it so much more when it does.

We hope and plan to see you on the other side (of COVID that is .. not the other 'other side').

Think this is how all in the international travel industry are feeling ...

I’ve written a lot about mental health in the last few years. I’ve invested a lot in my own, and in the mental health programs and support we offer staff at Platinum.
