New community exhibition alert at Community Bank Clovelly

Michael Emery is a British-born Australian photographer, author and storyteller.

In the spring of 1980, he travelled to China as the photographer aboard the MV Aquamarine.

Between assignments photographing passengers, he took his Nikon FE into the streets of Tianjin, Beijing and Shanghai.

He was drawn to everyday moments: children on their way to school, families together, people at work, and the smiles exchanged with a stranger carrying a camera.

Decades later, those colour photographs have become a record of ordinary lives in a time that many people remember and younger generations want to understand.

Mike is the author of China 1980 and China's Children. Through his books and exhibitions, he hopes to preserve the stories behind the photographs and reconnect with more of the people pictured in them.

Mike's photographs have been exhibited in China at Artyzen Habitat Hongqiao Shanghai; Fujifilm X-Space, Shanghai; Six Arts Museum in Lili Ancient Town, Suzhou; the Australian Embassy in Beijing; and JinShang Yuan, Beijing.

‘Nice to meet you - China 1980’ brings that work to Community Bank Clovelly, Mike’ first Australian exhibition.

Now showing at Community Bank Clovelly, 222 Clovelly Road, Mon - Fri 9.30am - 5pm!

Prints and books are available for sale at the bank.
