Meet Jo Donahue, who has been with CIA Insurance for a total of 17 years. Based in Gippsland Jo enjoys working remotely as a Domestic Account Manager specialising in Home, Contents, Residential Landlords, Motor Vehicle, Caravan and Boat Insurance. A mother of two children, a ‘staffy’ dog and four cats, Jo loves the flexibility, support and training provided by CIA, whom she describes as being “like a big family”.

Residential strata premiums have risen sharply since the start of the year, in some extreme cases by 25-40%. CIA Head of Strata Arthur Tsoukatos says last year's floods and increasing building materials costs have added to the existing "stress factors" that are effecting the strata line. These stress factors are mainly caused by defects like non-compliant cladding, faulty waterproofing works, and other quality-related issues.

Because of this, Tsoukatos recommends that the owners corporations budget for a 20% increase for the future.

The CIA Team Building Day was an informative day presenting the exciting changes to come for the business this year, a major announcement was made to the team regarding our Strategic Partnership with Network Insurance Group, and the team are excited about the new opportunities this will present. Following the formalities, the team had some fun, team building and competitive relaxation with lawn bowls, followed by a team dinner. We also took the opportunity to thank Neil Chambers for coming out of retirement to be an exemplary Santa at the 2022 Staff Christmas Party.

La Niña has been causing havoc across eastern Australia and more recently in Auckland NZ. The combined insurance damage from the 2021 and 2022 storms and flooding was $5.92 billion with more than 296,000 claims lodged.

The Insurance Council of Australia suggests taking these actions to protect your home or business:
1️⃣ Review all building, contents, and landlord insurance policies and checking cover for flood and storm (CIA Insurance can assist you with this).
2️⃣ Check your cover for temporary accommodation for people and your pets.
3️⃣ Review the sum insured for building and contents, checking that the amount matches the current replacement, repair and rebuild costs for your property and contents.
4️⃣ Prepare a room-by-room inventory of the contents of your business.
5️⃣ Take practical steps such as clearing the gutters and downpipes. Ensure your roof, windows and doors are secured and can withstand heavy rainfall.

After two years of lockdowns, Australians are ready and planning to travel. According to a survey* released by the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) and the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website, more than two thirds (68 per cent) think that if an Australian has a medical emergency overseas, a representative will ensure they get the medical treatment they need. Fifty per cent believe that if an Australian has a medical emergency overseas the Australian Government will arrange and fund repatriation. This of course is a fallacy.

If you own a townhouse, unit, or apartment and you’re sharing common space with others, you don’t want to be left to foot the bill if there’s damage to shared parts of the building or items. Strata insurance protects the building and common areas or facilities, with the premiums paid for by the owners’ corporation. Strata insurance is compulsory in every state – so if you are a lot owner in a townhouse, unit, flat, apartment or duplex, the owner’s corporation will need strata insurance.
