EMERGENCY ALERT - Prepare Now for Major Flood Levels - Charleyโs Creek Chinchilla - flood update as at 1.20pm Tuesday 10 March 2026.
> Chinchilla residents are urged to PREPARE NOW FOR MAJOR FLOODING in Charley's Creek between 3.00pm and 6.00pm today. Level was at 5.71m as at 1.15pm this afternoon.
> Charley's Creek is expected to peak at 6.8m at Chinchilla around 12.00pm noon on Thursday. The 2011 flood in Chinchilla saw peak of 7.46m which impacted around 34 properties.
For non-life-threatening flood and storm emergency assistance, contact SES on 132 500 or 132500.qld.gov.au. In a life-threatening situation, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
> Bureau of Meteorology advises that homes will be impacted. This is likely to be after dark; residents should prepare now and not leave it until nightfall.
> Low-lying residents should plan to stay with family or friends. Evacuations are voluntary at this stage, and no emergency evacuation centre has been established. This may change as we continue to monitor the rising flood levels.
> Major roads and highways will be closed.
What you need to do:
โข Pack enough clothes, food, water, medicine, baby items (like nappies, formula) and pet food for three days. Plan not to have a fridge or microwave.
โข Get ready to take your pets, mobile phone charger, battery-powered radio, torch, and valuables like photos, cash, and important documents (like identification, insurance, or banking records).
โข If you have children, make sure they are with you or a responsible adult.
โข Lift important things onto beds, tables, shelves, or upstairs to protect them.
โข Decide where you and the people you live with will go. Go to a safe and high place, away from flooding.
โข Plan your travel path and decide how you will get to your safe place. Ensure you have enough fuel in your vehicle to ensure safe travel.
โข If you come to a flooded road, turn around and go another way. Do not drive through floodwater.
โข Warn friends, family, and neighbours in the area that a flood is coming.
โข Help others to get ready to leave if you can.
If you find it hard to move quickly or have special or medical needs:
โข Use your Person-Centred Emergency Plan (P-CEP) now, if you have one.
โข Make sure you have enough medicine for at least one week.
โข If anyone in your house uses powered medical equipment, like a dialysis machine or ventilator, decide now where you will go in case you lose power.
โข Call your support person or service to organise transport if you need to leave.
โข Leaving early and during daylight hours is safer than waiting and travelling at night.
If you are a tourist, visitor, camper or caravanner:
โข Campers and caravanners should start packing up now.
โข If you do not need to be in the warning area, leave now. Check road conditions and plan your route before you leave.
โข Be ready to move if the situation gets worse.
โข Ask the campground owners whether the site floods.
โข Check your surrounding water catchments and monitor conditions.
