We recently purchased a position in Elders Limited to the Oracle Emerging Companies Portfolio. Elders has been an integral part of Australia’s rural business landscape since 1839.

Elders provides various services to primary producers, supporting their needs throughout the entire production cycle. From finance, banking, and real estate services to wool, grain, and livestock trading. Elders offers innovative services to those working in the agricultural industry and is heavily involved in all aspects of primary production.

Elders are benefiting from rising fertiliser and chemical prices, good farming conditions and food inflation. We expect to see high earnings growth for the company in Fiscal Year 2022 and Fiscal Year 2023.

We recently added Washington H Soul Pattinson (WHSP) to the Oracle Australian Equities Portfolio. WHSP is an investment house with a portfolio encompassing many industries including its traditional field of pharmaceuticals, as well as mining, building materials, property investment, telecommunications, financial services, and other equity investments. They are often referred to as Australia’s Berkshire Hathaway, due to its conglomerate business model in which they own huge stakes in the likes of New Hope Group, TPG Telecom, and Brickworks.

As well as taking large stakes in public companies, they also have a material private equity portfolio consisting of private businesses such as Ampcontrol, the nation’s largest private engineering company, as well as managing a share portfolio recently acquired from Milton Corporation. The Milner family run the business and own around 6% of the company, led by Chairman Robert Milner whose great, great Grandfather was the founder of the company. This focus and alignment with shareholders have allowed the company to produce a total shareholder return of 13.4% per annum over the past 20 years, without missing a dividend once and increasing it every single year. We support management to continue to produce high quality returns for shareholders.

A company can have the best product or service, a significant market opportunity potentially running into billions, and able to generate high margins and returns. Although, if the “jockey” is mediocre, it’s most likely your “horse” is going to finish last, if they finish the race at all.

In our latest blog, Oracle Portfolio Manager Johan Snyman discusses the power of people, in terms of our approach to identifying and investing in high-quality companies in our global universe.

If the “jockey” is mediocre, it’s most likely your “horse” is going to finish last - don't forget the power of people.

For any consumer of daily financial news, this will ring true.

Equity markets sway wildly from day to day on the smallest of news, rally, and crash on sentiment, and celebrate or vilify the silliest data points. It’s important not to get caught up in the madness. Instead, stick to your homework. Always stay rational.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?

I was a part-time farmer in South Africa, with my wife managing a hydroponics business covering two hectares with tunnels. We grew cucumbers and tomatoes and delivered eight tons of cucumbers to the fresh produce market in Johannesburg on a weekly basis. Besides hydroponics, I was owner of a farm with 400 commercial cattle, and a Brahman stud of 40 animals, and also had a stud of Dexter cattle on the farm we did hydroponics. The improvement in genetics of the Dexter breed was close to my heart and all the testing for traits such as meat tenderness, marbling and feed efficiency was performed by Genestar in the US. My “love affair” with the Dexter breed took me and my wife to the first Dundrum International Dexter gathering in Ireland 2013 – Dundrum is regarded as the home of the Dexter cattle.

Nowadays, I keep myself busy with model trains, more the electronics aspect of it, such as multiple train control through use of computers.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The one aspect I enjoy most about working as equities analyst and portfolio manager is no two days are the same. I find myself focusing a lot of time understanding who the “jockey of the horse” is and believe that great vision and great people deliver great companies through great financial management.
