Each afternoon at the branch, ledgers, work awaiting to be “ledgered” and tellers cash were locked in the strongroom, to be opened again the next morning in order for the branch to function. This strongroom had two locks and required two people to secure it and open it. It was the mid-1970s. The bank counter stretched long and straight, with a Teller’s box stationed at each end—Garry in one, me in the other. The alarm system was anything but sophisticated. Each box had a chunky button on the floor, reminiscent of the old headlight dipper switches in vintage cars. One press and the siren would slowly wind up to a deafening crescendo....
