💰 The Numismatic Noodler 003 …

This early King Charles I Silver Shilling is about 400 years old!!!

These coins were hammer struck by the Tower Mint in London during the late 1620’s in honour of the Coronation of King Charles the First.

The front of the coin shows a square topped Royal Shield of Arms laid directly over a long, pronged cross.

The Latin motto around the edge reads ‘CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO’ - I reign under the auspices of Christ.

The back of the coin features King Charles I wearing coronation robes with an elaborate, stiff lace ruffle.

After being convicted of high treason and tyranny during the English Civil War, King Charles I was beheaded on 30 January 1649.

The uneven circle shape of this coin is because they were struck using 925 Stirling Silver and whilst in circulation, their edges were ‘clipped’ and the clipped bits of silver were melted down and sold.

The original face value of these shillings was 12 pence or 1/20th of a pound - but today, a numismatic noodler would pay anywhere up to around $600 AUD for one of these in good condition.

💰 Welcome to the “Numismatic Noodler”

What is a Numismatic Noodler?? It is a coin collector - someone who collects rare, unusual and valuable coins and searches through coins in circulation hoping to find rare, low mintage or error struck coins.

Our local community is home to a few ‘coin noodlers’ who have kindly agreed to share some of their knowledge and collection with us!!

💰 The Numismatic Noodler 002 …

This beautiful coin is a 1984 Canadian $1 Silver Dollar issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to mark the 150th anniversary (sesquicentennial) of the incorporation of the City of Toronto in 1834.

The image on the coin depicts an Indigenous Indian paddling a canoe in the foreground with the skyline of Toronto in the background.

The back of the coin features the bust of Queen Elizabeth II at age 37.

Made from a mix of 50% silver and 50% copper, at the time of minting these coins were worth a face value of $1 Canadian Dollar and proof coins were sold in a Royal Canadian Mint black clamshell case.

Because the coin is not pure silver, its raw precious metal value is lower than its overall weight of 23.33 grams and buillion value only around $18 to $20.

However, to a collector, a proof coin like this one would be worth around $80 to $100.

A massive shoutout to Community Bank Capel, who have donated $9,850 to Capel Riders over the years. Their support has helped us fund our support trailer, PA system, portable kitchen for charity events and club nights, and plenty more behind the scenes.

The Community Bank Capel (Bendigo) has played a huge part in helping Capel Riders grow into the club we are today — which in turn allows us to support the community the way we do.

💰 So welcome to the Numismatic Noodler 001 … 💰

🪙 This is a Stirling Silver Quarter Pound Crown minted in Australia to celebrate the coronation of King George VI.

🪙 Released in 1937, production of these coins was ended at the end of 1938, as their large size made them unpopular with the general population.

🪙 Most of the coins that were produced in the latter half of 1938 ended up being melted down and the sterling silver reused.

🪙 At the time of minting these coins were worth a face value of 25c - hence the ‘quarter pound crown’ name.

🪙 In today’s market, these stirling silver coins would be worth about $70 each in buillion value.

🪙 To a collector, the 1937 coin is worth anywhere between $90 to $120, and the 1938 coin anywhere between $180 to $560.

🌿🌱🌿 How lovely to see some of the ladies from the Capel Community Garden Inc. and the Dalyellup Community Garden out on the weekend at Thommo's Community Garden making connections and sharing gardening ideas and knowledge.

🌿🌱🌿 Thommo’s is hosting a ‘Spring in the Garden’ event on Saturday 24th October and is a wonderful reason to come, see and enjoy the benefits of local community gardens!!

We hope that the new bench seats for the CWA WA - Capel Branch are host to many cups of tea, conversation and friendships 🩵🩵🩵

Thank you to Community Bank Capel Bendigo for our grant cheque of $1,000 we received from your famous and fun ~ Pitch Night ~ event.
This will go towards our special project of 2x blue park benches that will be made by the Capel Mens Shed.
Also the name plaques that will be placed on them.
So people can take a load off and rest awhile, providing an opportunity to connect with others.
We are very grateful of the very caring community collaboration.
