A supplier email asking you to change bank details deserves a separate check before payment.

Business email compromise can make an altered invoice or payment request look convincing. Verify the change by calling a contact using a number you already trust or independently confirm. A reply to the same email thread is not an independent check.

Build that step into your payment process, record the confirmation and consider a second person's approval for bank-detail changes.

EEA Advisory can help you build clearer bookkeeping and payment controls around the way your business works.

Before engaging an individual contractor, check whether the arrangement creates a super obligation.

An individual working under a contract mainly for their personal labour may be treated as an employee for super purposes. The actual terms matter, including whether they must do the work personally or can delegate it, and whether payment is for labour or a result. Having an ABN does not settle the question.

The ATO distinguishes this from contracting with a company, trust or partnership, where you do not pay super for the person that entity employs to perform the work.

Employment classification and the super rules also need separate consideration. Ask EEA Advisory to help you check the arrangement before the first payment.

Your company's tax rate depends on its position for the relevant income year.

A base rate entity is generally taxed at 25%. It must have aggregated turnover below $50 million and base rate entity passive income of 80% or less of its assessable income. Other companies are generally taxed at 30%.

Investment income or changes across a business group can affect the calculation. Check the eligibility conditions each year, and review dividend franking separately because its calculation can differ.

EEA Advisory can help you understand which figures matter for your company.

When a business earns income mainly from an individual's skills or effort, the personal services income (PSI) rules may be relevant.

The results test asks whether you are paid to produce a result, provide the tools or equipment required for the work, and bear the cost of fixing defects. All three conditions must be met for at least 75% of your PSI.

If you rely on another personal services business test, self-assessment generally also requires less than 80% of your PSI to come from one client and its associates. A personal services business determination may be an option where you cannot self-assess.

Thinking about using a tax agent for the first time, or changing agents for your individual tax return?

Contact the new registered tax agent before 31 October to discuss joining their lodgment program. Your actual due date depends on your circumstances, so confirm it with the agent rather than assuming an extension applies.

For sole traders and owner-directors, this is a useful early-October check alongside your business obligations.

Speak with EEA Advisory about your individual return and the records to have ready.

Month-end should answer questions, not create them.

A useful monthly close confirms that bank and card accounts reconcile, customer and supplier balances make sense, payroll agrees with the ledger, and clearing accounts have no unexplained items.

It should also attach the evidence behind unusual transactions and leave a short note for anything that needs follow-up.

That routine gives you a current view of cash flow and performance before the next BAS deadline arrives.

Nicola and the EEA bookkeeping team help business owners keep that rhythm going throughout the year.

An emailed PDF is digital, but it is not an eInvoice.

In Australia, eInvoicing sends structured invoice data securely between compatible accounting systems through the Peppol network. It can reduce manual entry, missing invoices, errors and exposure to invoice scams.

Both businesses need compatible software connected to the network. The ATO administers the Australian network, but it cannot access or view your invoices.

Ask your software provider whether eInvoicing is available and identify the suppliers or customers who would benefit most.

A better invoice path gives your bookkeeping cleaner data from the start.

Sending the invoice is only the first step.

A healthy accounts receivable process has a simple rhythm: send the invoice promptly, make the payment terms clear, track the due date and follow up consistently.

Small errors slow everything down. An old email address, unclear description or missing purchase order can leave good work sitting unpaid.

Review your ageing report each week. Give every overdue invoice an owner and a next action. Keep the conversation polite, clear and documented.

Good bookkeeping turns invoicing into cash flow, not a pile of promises.

If overdue accounts keep surprising you, EEA Advisory can help tighten the process.

Before you claim GST, check the invoice.

A valid tax invoice should clearly identify the seller, show the ABN, include the issue date, describe the sale and show the GST treatment.

For taxable sales of $1,000 or more, it should also show the buyer's identity or ABN.

Catching a missing detail before payment saves follow-up work at BAS time. It also gives your bookkeeper the evidence needed to code the transaction correctly.

Build the check into accounts payable, not into the quarter-end clean-up.

Not sure whether your supplier documents are doing the job? EEA Advisory can help review the process.

How long should you keep business records?

Most tax and transaction records need to be kept for five years. Employee time and wage records need to be kept for seven years.

Saving everything in accounting software is a good start, but it is not the whole plan. Records need to stay readable, accessible and backed up. Supporting documents should also remain connected to the transaction they explain.

Set a clear retention rule for tax, payroll and long-lived assets, then test whether you can retrieve an older record without hunting.

A tidy archive protects more than storage space. It gives your business evidence when it matters.

General information only. Some records need to be kept for longer.
