Great work by Vic Feral Eradication in their professional rabbit control programs! This is an excellent graphic illustration of the obvious benefits from ongoing control. Regular downward pressure prevents potential breeding and rapid explosions in local populations.

VFE has removed 3,995 rabbits in just over 18 months, all from peri-urban environments.

But the impact goes beyond the rabbits removed. Every breeding female removed also reduces the potential for future generations.

The graphic illustrates how quickly those numbers could add up. These are breeding estimates, rather than a confirmed count of rabbits prevented.

Nice video and text (read it all) lesson for anyone who might think kangaroos are not capable of ripping apart human limbs.

“Good Intentions, Bad Results

A group of people hiking in Megalong Valley in NSW, Australia, found a joey (baby kangaroo) that had gotten itself tied up in a wire fence. When they attempted to untangle it, they found out pretty quickly that the mom had not left the baby to its own devices.

Unfortunately for the woman on the left, even the purest of intentions could not save her from the protective instinct of the mother kangaroo, who could not allow anyone to get too close without doing everything in her power to defend her immobilized kid.

The videographer understandably had trouble keeping all of this in frame while trying to help, but after the camera cuts away the kangaroo proceeded to beat the woman, who had now flipped over onto her stomach in an attempt to crawl away, repeatedly on her upper and lower back.

It wasn’t until the attack subsided, and the woman tried to stand up again that she realized the kangaroo had sliced open her leg, and part of her calf muscle was hanging on for dear life. She was rushed to the nearest hospital, received emergency surgery, and recovered after several months.

No word on whether or not the rescue of joey was reattempted. The hikers in this group obviously had to prioritize the diced up woman.

Good explanation of why cats and rabbits (two "superinvaders") are the worst of Australia's 3,000 introduced and invasive species:

"Both cats and rabbits have exploited ecological niches not well used by native Australian animals.

No marsupial predators have diets as broad as feral cats, nor do they roam everywhere from the baking deserts of Central Australia to the freezing forests of Tasmania.

Australia has no mid-sized marsupials able to breed like, well, rabbits and devour all greenery in sight. Bettongs prefer roots and fungi, while bilbies are omnivores. Both reproduce much more slowly.

Every other continent has native cat (felids) and rabbit relatives (lagomorphs). But Australia did not, and so our species were uniquely unprepared.

Before human colonisation, the main mammals preying on bilbies were quolls, which are smaller and slower than feral cats.

Many native plants – especially in drier regions – also produce seedlings vulnerable to the ravenous grazing of rabbits.

Worse, rabbits often avoid invasive weeds such as lantana (native to the Americas), as these co-evolved with rabbits or their relatives and acquired defences such as an unpleasant taste."

Isolation has been both blessing and curse for the wildlife of both countries.
