To wrap up Scam Awareness Week for 2026 we need to remember that last year, more than 274,000 Australians were scammed. Not because they weren’t paying attention, because scams are sophisticated, convincing, and designed to catch people off guard.

Behind that number are parents, friends, neighbours and colleagues. No one’s just a number.

There are three steps that can help you avoid being scammed:
- Stop before you act.
- Check who you’re really dealing with.
- Protect yourself and others by reporting the scam to Scamwatch.

“Mum, my phone’s broken.”

That’s how it started for Susanne.

Message after message claimed to be from her daughter. Her phone was broken. Her bank account was frozen. She needed money urgently. By the time Susanne called her daughter to check, nearly $26,000 had been transferred.

“Unless you’re 100% sure who it’s coming from, don’t engage.”

Behind every scam report is a real person and a real story. No one’s just a number.

This week is Scam Awareness Week. Last year there were 274,577 Australians scammed.

Scams have changed and no longer arrive with big obvious red flags. These days they can look like legitimate text from your bank, an email from a supplier or a message from a loved one.

There are 3 steps you should do to protect you against scammers.

STOP
Always take a moment before giving your money or personal information to anyone

CHECK
Make sure the person or organisation you're dealing with is real.

PROTECT
Act quickly if something feels wrong. The sooner you take action, the better you can protect yourself and others from scammers.
