The holiday season comes faster than you think β€” and the businesses that plan for it in October are the ones who actually enjoy December.

Here's your holiday planning checklist:

☐ Set your holiday sales goals β€” what do you want Q3 to look like?
☐ Create your holiday marketing plan β€” what are you promoting and when?
☐ Plan promotions and special offers β€” and price them properly
☐ Forecast your cash flow β€” holidays often mean delayed payments and higher expenses
☐ Order inventory and supplies early β€” before stock runs out and prices go up
☐ Plan employee schedules and time off β€” including your own
☐ Budget for bonuses and holiday expenses β€” don't let this catch you off guard

Save this and work through it this month. October is the right time. πŸ“Œ

One of the most common questions I get from people thinking about starting a business:

"Should I wait until 1 July for a clean start to the financial year?"

Honest answer: it depends β€” but usually no.

Waiting until 1 July gives you a clean financial year from day one, which makes reporting slightly simpler. But if you're ready now, waiting 6+ months means 6 months of momentum you haven't built, clients you haven't won, and revenue you haven't earned.

Starting now means you can immediately start tracking business expenses, building your client base, and learning what your business actually looks like in practice.

The best time to start is when you're ready. The financial year will sort itself out.

Two terms that trip people up constantly β€” here's the simple version.

Accounts Receivable = money owed TO you. Invoices you've sent that haven't been paid yet. This is an asset β€” it's money that's yours, you just haven't collected it yet.

Accounts Payable = money you owe TO others. Bills you've received that you haven't paid yet. This is a liability.

Both need to be reviewed regularly. A big accounts receivable balance looks good on paper but does nothing for your cash flow if you're not actively collecting it. And a growing accounts payable means obligations are building up.

Check both of these in your Xero or QBO this week. πŸ“Œ

Clean-up vs catch-up β€” they sound similar but they're actually different problems.

A catch-up is when your books are behind β€” transactions haven't been entered, reconciliations haven't been done. You're up to date in terms of accuracy, you're just behind in terms of time.

A clean-up is when things have been entered but entered incorrectly β€” wrong accounts, duplicate transactions, GST errors, uncategorised items piling up. The books are current but not accurate.

Some businesses need both.

Knowing which one you need helps you understand what kind of help to ask for β€” and what it's likely to take to fix.

Which one sounds more like your situation right now? πŸ‘‡

Two terms that come up a lot β€” and getting them confused can affect how you claim them at tax time.

Operating expenses are the everyday costs of running your business:
β†’ Rent, utilities, software subscriptions, advertising, office supplies

Capital expenses are purchases of assets that provide value beyond the current year:
β†’ Equipment, machinery, vehicles, furniture, property improvements

Why does it matter? Because they're treated differently for tax and accounting purposes. Operating expenses are generally deductible in the year they're incurred. Capital expenses are usually depreciated over time.

If you're not sure how something should be coded in your books β€” that's worth a conversation with your accountant before you lodge.

Any questions on this? Drop them below. πŸ’œ

Today is World Mental Health Day β€” and I want to say something genuine, not just post the hashtag.

Running a small business is hard on your mental health in ways people don't always talk about. The financial pressure, the uncertainty, the isolation of being the one who has to figure everything out. It adds up.

If you're struggling right now β€” financially, mentally, or just running on empty β€” please reach out to someone today. A friend, your GP, a helpline. Anyone.

And if you're doing okay β€” check in on someone who might not be. Sometimes that's all it takes.

You don't have to be fine all the time. πŸ’œ

Before Q2 gets away from you β€” forecast these four numbers. It doesn't have to be complicated.

1. Expected cash coming in β€” based on your pipeline and existing clients, what do you realistically expect to collect this quarter?

2. Payroll β€” wages, super, payroll tax. Know what's going out and when.

3. Tax payments β€” what PAYG instalments, BAS payments or other tax obligations are due this quarter?

4. Large upcoming expenses β€” equipment, marketing, inventory, holiday costs. Anything big that's coming up.

Add those up and compare them to what's expected to come in. That's your Q2 cash flow picture in its simplest form.

Save this and do it this week. πŸ“Œ

The money conversations most business owners aren't having β€” but should be.

Am I actually collecting the cash I'm owed, or just invoicing and hoping?
Do I know what's coming out of my account in the next 30 days?
If I had a slow month tomorrow, could I cover my costs?
Am I confusing revenue with cash flow?
Do I know the difference between profit and cash in my bank?

These aren't complicated questions. But most business owners can't answer them confidently β€” not because they don't care, but because the information isn't visible enough.

That's a bookkeeping problem. And it's a fixable one.

Which of these would you struggle to answer right now? πŸ‘‡
