Wondering why you get the 50 questions run around at some exchanges when all you want to know is 'What's the rate ?'

If there's all sorts of percentages and sliding scales and mental gymnastics happening then yes, you're being swindled by a cashier who's trying to figure out how 'squeezable' a customer you are.

If you can't get a clear-cut quote for 'X' amount inclusive of all fees, if any, in less than 30 seconds you need to shop elsewhere because they're sizing you up.

EG :

Atlas : EU 1000 @ .5509 + AU$0 fee = AU$1815.20

Other FX : EU 1000 @ .5296 + AU$0 fee = AU$1888.20

This was their "final quote" after trying to get me to up the EU amount so "can give you a better rate". And the better rate wasn't as good as our rate rate 😮

Yes, you can ask for a better rate and yes, sometimes we'll give it to you (usually once you're at the 5 or 10k mark ..) but we don't make you dance like a monkey to get the information.

Hi All,

We've been getting a lot of notes in this condition lately .. and people telling us we have to take them 'because they're money'.
Yes and no.
Currency is alive, so to speak.
It has current denominations and deceased (discontinued) ones. It has an acceptable and accepted condition and then unacceptable condition. Tears, dirt, mould, stains, old issue, outmoded materials, ink, food, blood (!) means no, we don't have to exchange it .. at our risk.
This doesn't mean it can't be exchanged, but generally only at a bank in its country of origin, where they will swap it for current notes and send the old/dirty ones to the Reserve Bank for destruction, not third party independent currency exchanges who pay you in local value then have to cross their fingers the Wholesaler will honour it at clearance, cos there's no way we can - or would - onsell notes such as these *gag

We can send them on collection, which means we take them from you (and your bank details), send them to the Wholesaler and if they honour the notes we will pay you upon confirmation, at the rate of the day. This is as close to a win win as possible with cash in this condition.

What happens if WS reject them ?
They're either fakes that will be reported and destroyed or just 'too far gone' but can be returned to you upon request.
