You have your health checked regularly… but when was the last time you gave your finances a check-up?
Meet Grace. She’s pretty good at keeping on top of her health appointments, but she’s just realised something…
When did she last check how her super was performing?
For many of us, super is something that quietly sits in the background. Our employer makes contributions, we receive an annual statement, and we assume everything is tracking along nicely.
But your super could be one of your biggest financial assets, and how it’s managed today can make a significant difference to your lifestyle in retirement.
Here’s what you should be checking:
✅ Investment performance: How has your super performed over the past 3, 5 and 10 years? Don’t just look at the last 12 months.
✅ Compare against benchmarks: Is your super delivering competitive returns compared with an appropriate benchmark and similar investment options? Remember to compare investments with similar risk levels and asset allocations.
✅ Understand your fees: What are you actually paying in administration, investment, indirect costs and other fees? Small differences can add up over time.
✅ Review your investment strategy: Does your current investment option still suit your age, goals, risk tolerance and retirement timeframe?
✅ Check your insurance: Do you have insurance through super? Is the cover appropriate for your circumstances, and do you understand what it costs?
💰 Did you know that just 1% more in annual fees could make a big difference to your retirement savings?
Let’s say you have $200,000 in super, with no additional contributions, invested for another 20 years.
Assuming a 7% annual investment return before fees:
• With fees of 1% p.a., your balance could grow to approximately $641,000.
• With fees of 2% p.a., your balance could grow to approximately $531,000.
That’s a difference of around $110,000!
And that’s without factoring in any additional super contributions.
Of course, lower fees don’t automatically mean better value. Investment performance, risk, features, insurance and the services you receive all matter. The important thing is understanding what you are paying and what you are getting in return.
🌸 Your super deserves more than a quick glance at your annual statement.
At Leora Wealth, we help you understand your super, review your investment strategy and make informed decisions about your financial future.
