2026 Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF) grants awards ceremony 🏆

Since 2021, MAIC has funded a special grants program with EMF which supports clinicians in regional, rural and remote areas, to engage in research towards advancing trauma care.

Acting Insurance Commissioner Gaenor Walker was honoured to award the successful applicants from the 2025 program at the recent EMF grants awards ceremony, including two new research project grants and two scholarship recipients.

Congratulations to:
🔎 Dr Amanda McConnell (Cairns Hospital) – analysing major accidents in North Queensland Hospitals
🔎 Ms Elizabeth Doran (RFDS Queensland) – evaluating the RFDS medical chests service
🎓 Scholarship recipients: Tara Pidgeon (Lifeflight) & Roberta Ridolfi (Retrieval Services QLD)

While claims to the Queensland Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance scheme occur less frequently in these areas, when they do, they often result in more serious injuries.

We are proud to partner with EMF and look forward to seeing the outcomes of these research projects as they progress during 2026 🤝

🙌 Queensland’s trauma management improvements showcased by Jamieson Trauma Institute (JTI)

JTI recently hosted its annual showcase event providing a snapshot of their research initiatives aimed at enhancing trauma management across Queensland.

The theme of this year’s event, “Keep the focus – navigating complexity”, was reflected in the many topics presented exploring the recovery journey after trauma and the challenges of delivering excellence in complex environments 🔎

MAIC is a key funder of JTI and, with road trauma on the rise, we are proud to see the collaboration between researchers, clinicians, consumers and partners driving advancements across the trauma management system 🤝

Gear up on safety for every ride 🏍️

The latest safety ratings for jackets and pants are now available from the Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program (MotoCAP).

Your motorcycle gear matters! Gear with strong abrasion, impact and burst protection can be the difference between a one-star and a five-star safety rating, helping prevent injury if you crash.

MAIC is proud to partner with MotoCAP to help motorcyclists make informed choices about gear that offers the best protection and comfort 🤝

School is back in session for 2026, and that means school zone speed limits are once again in effect 🚸

At MAIC, we are committed to ensuring our Queensland roads are safe for everyone. We urge all drivers to do their part by staying alert while driving, slowing down in school zones, and watching out for children and pedestrians.

Remember, kids can be unpredictable, so please slow down.

Together, we can make sure every child gets to and from school safely 🤝

🚗✨ Last week, MAIC hosted the first-ever Queensland Road Safety Research Collaboration showcase, bringing together our three road safety research collaborations based at QUT, Griffith University, and the University of the Sunshine Coast!

This exciting event was all about sharing research outcomes, discussing future projects, and strengthening partnerships to improve road safety across Queensland. Each university brings unique expertise including:
✅ QUT: young drivers, distraction and road safety messaging
✅ Griffith: motorcycles and fleet safety
✅ UniSC: impaired driving, older drivers and regional road safety

We received a snapshot on current research projects underway, including:
🔹 QUT's work on enhancing learner driver instructor training and reducing tailgating behaviours.
🔹 UniSC's research into medicinal cannabis and road safety for older adults.
🔹 Griffith's insights into lane-filtering motorcycles and driver interactions with heavy vehicles.

Special mention to our presenters Sharon Newnam; Sina Rajali; David Rodwell; Ioni Lewis and Catherine Kennon from QUT, Kerry Armstrong; Hanna Watling; Kayla Stefanidis from USC, Darren Wishart; Blake Palmer; Matt Stainer; Andrew Campbell from Griffith and Angela Watson representing QUT and TMR

Together, we’re driving safer roads for Queenslanders. 🚦💛

Introducing… the smart bumper sticker 🚘

We’re proud to announce the cutting-edge pilot designed to tackle tailgating and reduce rear-end crashes on Queensland roads!

Developed in partnership with iMOVE Cooperative Research Centre, QUT (Queensland University of Technology), and Transport and Main Roads Queensland, this innovative, low-cost device uses sensors to detect unsafe following distances. Mounted on the back of vehicles, it displays real-time alerts to tailgating drivers, encouraging safer driving habits on the spot.

Rear-end crashes are the most common type of accident on Queensland roads, so this technology is designed to make a real difference. Over the next 12 months, fleet vehicles equipped with these devices will collect valuable data to assess their impact on road safety 🤝
