TAX GAME CHANGERS

This week's Savings Tip Jar podcast featured a chat with Federal Independent MP Nicolette Boele, who's concerned how the capital gains tax reforms will impact younger savers investing in shares, ETFs and startups. Nicolette also had a great savings tip to share around getting a better deal on your energy plan.

And in our Savings News Roundup, Dominic Beattie and Denise Raward discuss...

- the Opposition’s proposal to introduce tax bracket indexation (something that we’d actually directly asked Angus Taylor MP about on the pod back in episode 91!)

- more savings account rate changes in response to the RBA’s hike, and how (once again) big banks are failing to pass it on in full to all savings account customers.

- how the latest RBA minutes have reduced the odds of another RBA rate hike at next month’s meeting.

"WORST BUDGET I'VE EVER SEEN"

In this week's Savings Tip Jar podcast, Dominic Beattie and Denise Raward were joined by Emeritus Professor of Finance at UNSW Business School Peter Swan, who did not hold back in his assessment of Treasurer Jim Chalmers' fifth federal budget, describing it as the worst one he's seen in his 50 years of experience. Professor Swan lays out some of the potential unintended consequences of the new tax changes and questions the supposed benefits to younger generations.

In our Savings News Roundup, Dom and Denise outline the key impacts of the budget for savers, examine how some savings account customers are missing out on the hashtag rate hike, and detail the sudden drop in home loan lending observed in the latest ABS data.

And of course, we share our savings tips, including using a financial planner and not letting social media influence your standards. 🪙🪙🫙

RBA HIKE 3: THE DARK RATE RISES

This week's Savings Tip Jar podcast had a heavy focus on the latest RBA rate rise - the third of 2026, and perhaps not the last.

Joining Dominic Beattie and Denise Raward to provide some expert analysis was Dr Susan Stone, the Credit Union SA Chair of Economics at Adelaide University. Dr Stone expressed surprise at the RBA's "optimistic" expectations that inflation would peak in June.

Dom and Denise also talk through the property market slowdown in Sydney and Melbourne, and a potential new tax offset that’s rumoured to be in the federal budget.

And of course, we all share our savings tips - including a special points transfer offer from Velocity Frequent Flyer which Dom is particularly excited about.
