I say thank you..

Today I leave financial planning behind to concentrate on new ventures. It’s an industry that has made a home for me for close on 10 years and for that I am forever grateful, to say I have learnt a lot is an understatement, it’s an education I couldn’t have been afforded otherwise, no amount of money nor choice of institution could have provided an equivalent. Over that time I’ve grown and evolved as a person, quite frankly I was a baby when I started, now I’m a doting father and husband and wish to align my future endeavours to that of my family. There’s been highs and lows, as with any business it takes courage, grit and determination but I can honestly say I enjoyed so much success over the years in various ways; it afforded me a great lifestyle most could only dream of, given me courage to tackle things I never thought I could and allowed me an opportunity to get to know so many great people and families on a one-to-one basis. If not for the great clients over the years, you wouldn’t do it, they are the ‘why’ and I’ve been really blessed and fortunate with those that have entrusted me with their affairs.
I say thank you..

For those that have shown support over the years, I thank you. It should now be no surprise my website is down and I will look to close off the Del Castillo Investments Facebook business page as soon as possible. No doubt many will have questions as to what is next, let’s leave that to personal conversations over a good cuppa in the days to come, more than happy to talk and engage. Over and out for now friends!

In our latest Winter newsletter that we are about to send out we look into the positive effect optimism can have on our finances..

"A recent study connected the link between financial well-being and an optimistic mindset, finding that people who classify themselves as optimists enjoy 62 per cent fewer days of financial stress per year compared to pessimists."

I don't know about you, but 62 better days sounds pretty good to me. This is just one insightful article out of a few, if this type of content is interesting to you, just let us know and we include you on the next run. Optimist will see this as an opportunity :)

Case example (Real): Life insurance

Client holds off on applying for personal insurances covers for 4 years, it has been in the back of their mind to apply for covers acknowledging they have mortgage and that life is in full swing with a child. Both incomes are necessary in the household to suffice all financial obligations, month by month, little in the way of savings capacity ongoing.

Despite reminders to consider gaining valuable covers, and with life getting in the way, now wants to apply for personal insurance covers including death and income protection to protect their family. In that 3-4 years however, and in trying to keep up with ‘life’, fairly serious medical conditions have been acquired; high blood pressure in unison with high cholesterol to name a few. Now, some might say, well that’s normal, and eventually maybe that is the case, but what if we throw in, that said client is under 35, now it gets a little hairy, maybe.

This case will now need to be specifically underwritten and good practice from years of experience in this field, a pre-assessment should be sought to avoid or minimise chance of getting declined for covers after application, or having exclusions or price loadings imposed.

A financial planner is invaluable to this process in guiding and navigating insurers, underwriting, pricing, afforability and strategy or purpose for cover,

At the core of good financial planning should be providing guidance so people can make informed decisions about their financial future.

"In August 2019, ASIC released the results of independent research it had conducted in Report 627 Financial advice: What consumers really think.

The research, capturing insights from over 2,500 consumers, found that Australians tended to obtain or considered obtaining financial advice because of specific triggers. These included:

•having recently reached a financial goal and wanting to take the ‘next step’;
•beginning a new life stage (eg. starting a family or retiring);
•wanting advice to help them make a specific decision (such as whether to use their savings to renovate their home or invest);
•having increased means and wanting advice about how to manage it"

^Sometimes abstaining from doing can be more effective than trying and doing it incorrectly, be wary of partial information and truths**

"Whatever your inclination be assured that if you stay in your industry fund’s “high growth” mode for the whole of your career your super will almost certainly do better than a retail fund."

I felt a need to share this as I was reading and came across a very poorly written and researched online article which I immediately thought was down right potentially dangerous for someone unsuspecting or wasn't endowed with the right information to adequately assess against.

"Whatever your inclination". Let's reword that for what it is; "No matter what your situation, or what you feel or fear, do this". That's bordering outright criminal, let's just skate around the whole basis of personal advice why don't we, let's not take anyone's individual circumstances into account 🤨😯 Let's uniformly invest all the same way and in the same manner. Just remember the market cares little for winners or losers, for every winner there is inevitably losers 😡

Further, why don't we just throw out all investment disciplines all together, why don't we just put you all in into an absolute return or geared investment fund or hedge fund of sorts, seeing as possibly of a loss is 'almost certainly' not a possibility 🤥

Seek the right advice, set individual goals and put a plan into place that takes into account your situation, what your concerns are, what you want to personally achieve irrespective of the greater populace, your risk appetite and frankly what you will be comfortable with knowing it's for your own gain and that of your family. Peter has his own life, Peter's life is not your life 👍

Also worthwhile noting, the Australian economy contracted by 7% through the first half of the year in 2020, relatively small compared to other countries such as Europe and UK, approximately 12% and 20% respectively.

26/02/2021

Worth noting..

"In October 2020, the Australian Government announced that since the outbreak began, it had committed $507 billion (25.6% of GDP) in overall economic support, including $257 billion (13.0% of GDP) in direct economic support.

As a result, the deficit will reach $213.7 billion this year (Treasurer 2020)."

Every planned improvement needs to start with being honest and raw 😂

Financial planners get it, needs, wants and dreams, all are relevant and needed.

In difficult times such as this pandemic financial planners do alot of work that largely goes unnoticed and are often doing this at a concession to help clients in need.

"Advisers were inundated with an unprecedented volume of calls from clients as they dealt with both the emotional and financial consequences of businesses forced to shut their doors, unemployment and lost value of investments and savings.

It was advisers working extraordinarily long hours, many at greatly reduced rates to find solutions and alternatives for clients to cashing in investments, accessing super or cancelling their insurance and protection cover."
----

"It’s for this reason that I have come to view relationships as being no different to the foundations of a skyscraper.

They are not seen – are incredibly important – and the deeper / stronger they are – the higher and more structurally sound will be the building constructed on top.

As my adviser friend said in those few profound words, “We make a difference”.

It’s about time the legislators and advocates of change for the sake of change really look at the role and importance of financial advisers. They should acknowledge the contribution they have made to client/consumer financial well-being in the most trying of circumstances – and appreciate them as being a consumer asset and a valuable contributor as well as being part of the solution to industry sustainability, especially post Covid-19."

Joe Perri.

Thanks Joe, even we need encouraging words sometimes.

Important share**

For the last 7 weeks I have suffered from a debilitating illness/condition, have undergone tests and still no clear diagnosis. It is suspected ross river fever but a recent test could not confirm. For 7 weeks I have had constant pain and restriction from my joints and soft tissue to migrating areas around the body, sometimes the aggravation lasting days at a time or weeks.

At its worst, I was having to sleep upright on the couch not even able to lay flat due to pain. Today I cannot walk due to aggravation around my heel although yesterday briefly I was able to walk unassisted with a hobble, the relief was shortlived and I am back to using crutches as I woke up with the pain and inflammation back again.

I am being referred to a specialist now for soft tissue and joints but cannot be assured of a diagnosis, in the doctor's words, 'we only hope now, that the inflammation in your body subdues, goes back to normal range and you are are to carry on normal'.

When I expressed my concern regarding a lack of diagnosis knowing what I know as a financial planner and how that isn't seen favorably in the person insurance world (specifically referring to underwriting and application for covers across, Life, TPD, trauma and income protection) often leading to not being insurable, the doctor replied, 'the insurers have to accept that sometimes a diagnosis will not be possible'.

Moral of the story, do not back on continued luck with regards to your health. I am not mortally wounded and certainly don't think my life is in grave danger, but I have been prevented from living a normal existence for 7 or so weeks and continuing now and often in need of assistance and care. So, yes im a financial planner and some of what we preach about actually happens to us too. You have family and loved ones to think about, fend for and consider, act with some haste, set up your personal/family protection plans before its too late. It's easier to have the conversation now if you have relative good health not when the proverbial s**t has hit the fan.

Should we talk?
