Goodbye Bank and Hello Mortgage Extra

It was June 2004 and I had been working for one of the Big 4 banks for over 16 years when I decided to go out on my own as a Mortgage Broker. Everyone around me was being offered redundancy packages and I was waiting for mine, but it never eventuated. Maybe this was a sign that I was a valued employee and the Bank didn’t want to let me go.

With the support of my Wife I decided to take the plunge, going from a healthy income to zero income and no customers. We were now a one income family with two young boys to raise so my motivation to succeed was as strong as ever.

I needed an Accountant and I remembered a good old friend of mine John who was an Accountant however we had lost touch since our single bachelor days due to other life events such as getting married and having children.

I managed to track down John who helped me set up the Business. Now John already had a Broker that he referred his business to but I said to him that’s ok if there are any deals that the other Broker couldn’t do he could refer them to me. This meant that I got all the hardest deals possible but it was a good way of proving myself to John and being able to service his clients. Eventually the relationship between John and the other Broker dissolved and I became his number one and only referring Broker to this day.
