The “smart lock” quagmire…

We spend a lot of time helping customers after cheap smart locks fail, and there’s a reason many quality focused locksmiths are cautious about them.

A lot of these brands are marketing companies, not locksmiths. They sell flashy gadgets online without properly understanding doors, hardware, weather exposure, security, or long-term durability.

We regularly see issues across Brisbane homes and businesses with;

• poor build quality
• poor battery life
• poor weather resistance
• weak security
• poor after sales support

Most only carry a 12–24 month warranty, yet any quality electronic lock should reasonably last 6 - 10 years.

The biggest issue? When they fail, some companies may replace the unit but won’t cover the locksmith labour to remove and reinstall it, leaving customers out of pocket.

There are some genuinely good smart locks on the market, but there’s also a lot of heavily advertised junk.

At SK Locksmiths & Security, we recommend proven products with proper local support and long-term reliability, not gimmicks or trends. We only install products we’d trust on our own homes.

Cold weather and rain usually means one thing for timber doors in Brisbane, swelling and movement.

A lot of the time when a door suddenly becomes hard to lock, scrape the frame, or needs to be slammed shut, the lock itself is only showing the symptom. Adjusting a strike or tweaking a latch can sometimes get things working again temporarily, but if the door, frame or closer is out of alignment the problem normally comes back.

Alongside locksmithing, we also carry out door repairs and corrective work including door balancing, hinge repairs and replacement, door closer replacement, pivot and transom closer replacement, and general alignment work.

This side of the industry often overlaps between trades, so many companies will only handle the lock itself and then recommend a separate door repair company. Because we handle both, it can save a lot of time, money and back-and-forth organising between multiple trades while also making sure the actual cause of the issue gets resolved properly.

Sometimes a lock problem is actually a door problem, and we’re here to help.

Residential sliding glass door lock selection.

Unfortunately the majority of door manufacturers over the years have let the quality of hardware slip dramatically on new residential sliding glass doors. There are always exceptions to the rule of course but by and large the security and durability of your sliding glass doors is poor.

It’s a story everyone has heard before, manufacturers deciding to keep accessories (hardware) in house rather than buy from established companies that specialise, or outsourcing to the lowest bidder. What “in house” means in reality is an agreement with a cheap overseas manufacturer for hardware with their brand name on it. That’s very poor quality.

We could talk about locks and hardware for ever. But to keep things simple here is a quick cheat sheet to see if your glass doors could do with an upgrade.

- Throw the bolt with the door open (so you can see the hook/s) can you move the hook to the unlocked position with your finger? If so, it’s insecure

- Plastic or polymer handle? It’s insecure. Sounds obvious, but locks should be made out of metal!

- Keys are short, small or look like a letterbox/window type key (if they look like a letterbox key, it’s because it’s as secure as one….

- Single hook (parrot beak bolt) good quality locks have two going in opposing directions to prevent lift

- Does the handle have a key on the inside? The vast majority of quality glass door locks have a deadlocking function in addition to a day locking (snib function) (cheap ones can have key locking as well, but a lot don’t)

Here at SK Locksmiths & Security we love locks, hardware and security. Let us take the guess work out of your home security. We pride ourselves on high quality parts, excellent workmanship and good customer service.

Forced entry and lock selection.

Not all locks are made the same, just as all doors, hinges, frames etc.

Not only is there a massive quality and security difference between something poorly made and a high security mechanism. Choosing the right lock for your door can also differ depending on what door and frame you have!

For example, a high security lock designed for government, might not be appropriate for your door because the door itself is too thin, which won’t give the lock enough supporting material. Or to put it simply, the door breaks before the lock does!

Another type of mechanism might perform much better in an opening out door as opposed to opening in. Or you might have a door/frame set up where the frame is part of a side light that needs particular mechanisms that focus on strengthening your frame.

It’s horses for courses really, the through line is high quality = good, but there are different ways to approach different set ups to get an optimal outcome, and that’s what we do here at SK Locksmiths & Security!

Locks, Door Hardware and Proper Lubrication

One of the most common issues we see with locks isn’t wear and tear, it’s the wrong lubricant being used, or none being used at all!

It’s one of those things that sounds simple, but there’s a lot of bad advice out there so here’s a quick list of do’s and dont’s.

WD40 is not a lock lubricant

- WD40 has its place, but lubricating locks isn’t it.

- It doesn’t properly dissipate, and over time it attracts dust and debris. What starts as a quick fix turns into a thick sludge inside the lock. That sludge binds up the pins and springs and eventually the lock either becomes stiff or stops working altogether.

- There is one exception. If a lock is actively rusting (external gates). WD40 can be used to slow it down in the short term. But it should always be followed up with a proper lubricant.

Graphite should almost never be used

- Graphite has been recommended for years, but in modern locks it causes more problems than it solves.

- The only time it really makes sense is inside a completely sealed, air and moisture tight environment, like the internal mechanism of a safe. Even then, it needs to be used very sparingly.

- In normal door locks, graphite tends to absorb moisture and contamination. Over time it builds up and starts interfering with the fine tolerances inside the cylinder.

Common issues we see from graphite

- Graphite mixed with any liquid lubricant turns into a paste and jams the lock

- Too much graphite builds up and causes the lock to fail

- When the lock has to be removed and opened up, the graphite gets everywhere, including carpets and flooring

- In real world residential and commercial use, graphite is best avoided.

What you should be using instead

- There are a few products that actually work properly and don’t cause long term issues.

- INOX is a good all round option, especially for external locks. It handles moisture well and doesn’t gum up.

- 3 in 1 lock lubricant is designed specifically for cylinders and is a clean, light option.

- Dry PTFE sprays are also excellent. They leave a dry film and don’t attract dust, which makes them ideal for high use locks.

How to lubricate a lock properly

- A short burst into the keyway is enough, around half a second

- Insert the key and work the lock a few times

- If accessible, a light spray on the latch or bolt

- KEEP IT LIGHT! If the lock doesn’t free up after a short burst and 30 seconds or so. It is a mechanical issue that needs a proper repair.

Locks are small mechanical devices with tight tolerances. They don’t need much, but they do need the right products.

Most of the failures we attend could have been avoided with the correct lubricant used occasionally. In Brisbane conditions, every 6 to 12 months is usually enough.

If a lock is already stiff or gritty, continuing to spray different products into it often makes things worse rather than better.

If you’re unsure, or the lock isn’t behaving properly, it’s better to get it looked at before it turns into a bigger issue.

Here at SK Locksmiths & Security we supply and install quality hardware that is fit for purpose and your budget. Every piece of hardware we fit is lubricated with a long lasting film lubrication that shouldn’t need a reapplication for several years.

Free home security tips

We get asked a lot what people can do to improve their home security without spending a fortune. Most of the time it comes back to getting the basics right.

- Most outdoor key safes are very insecure

A lot of the common ones can be opened pretty quickly. They’re fine in certain situations, but they shouldn’t be relied on as your main level of security.

- Lock your meter box

This is one people often miss. Your alarm, CCTV and internet are usually accessible through there. If it’s unlocked, someone can interfere with your security before even trying to get inside, especially if you’re away.

- Install lockable window locks

Ground floor windows are a common entry point. A simple lock adds another barrier and makes a big difference.

- Create layers of security

Securing front and side gates goes a long way. Even a basic padlocked gate can make access harder and less appealing.

- Keep vehicles out of sight, or at least locked

Cars are often targeted for remotes, keys and tools. If they’re easy to access, it doesn’t take much to gain access

- Lock your doors properly!!

We see this all the time. If you’ve got deadlocks you don’t use because of fire safety concerns, it’s worth looking at day/night locking deadlocks. You can keep the place secure while still being able to get out quickly if needed.

- Open garage doors

Don’t leave the garage door open and unattended for any length of time

Security doesn’t have to be complicated.
If the basics are done properly, you’re already in a much better position. Feel free to give us a ring to have a chat 🔐
