Term of the Week: Compound Interest 📈

Einstein reportedly called it the "Eighth Wonder of the World." He said: "He who understands it, earns it... he who doesn't... pays it."

What is it? Simple interest is calculated only on the principal amount. Compound interest is calculated on the principal plus the accumulated interest.

Think of it like a snowball rolling down a hill. ❄️

The Good News: If you start saving or investing early, your money grows faster the longer you leave it.

The Bad News: If you have unpaid credit card debt or tax debt, the interest compounds against you, making the debt grow terrifyingly fast.

The Lesson: Make sure compound interest is working for you, not against you, in 2026.

"Buy when everyone else is selling..." 📉📈

J. Paul Getty wasn't just talking about the stock market; he was talking about discipline.

In small business, it is easy to follow the herd.

Competitors are slashing prices? You feel like you should too.

Everyone is over-hiring? You feel the pressure to expand.

But true success comes from having the confidence to swim against the tide.

To do that, you need to trust your own numbers more than you trust the "noise" of the market. If your books are solid, you can afford to hold steady when everyone else is panicking.

Stay calm. Trust your data. Play the long game.

Term of the Week: Bootstrapping 🥾

You hear this word a lot in the startup world, but what does it actually mean?

Bootstrapping is building a business from the ground up using only your existing resources—personal savings, sweat equity, and the cash coming in from the first few sales.

No investors. No massive bank loans. Just you making it work.

To us, bootstrapping is a badge of honour. It means you have retained full control of your vision. But it also means Cash Flow is King.

When you are bootstrapping, you can't afford to waste a dollar. Every expense needs to pull its weight.

Are you a bootstrapper? Let us know in the comments! 👇

"To acquire money requires valor, to keep money requires prudence, and to spend money well is an art." 🎨💸

Most business owners we know have plenty of Valor. It takes guts to start a business, chase clients, and send invoices.

But the Prudence part? That’s where things often get messy.

You work hard to earn your revenue—don't let it slip away through loose expenses or forgotten invoices.

Let us handle the "keeping it" (Bookkeeping) so you can focus on the "spending it well" (Growth).

Here is to mastering all three in 2026! 🥂

Igloos it together. 🧊🤣

We hope you are holding it together better than a penguin’s house after this first week back!

New year, new goals. 📈

But before you set random targets for 2026, you need to know where the bar is actually set.

Term of the Week: Benchmarking This is the process of comparing your business metrics against industry standards.

Are your wages too high compared to other cafes?

Is your profit margin healthy for a trade business?

Don't just guess your goals this year. Use benchmarking to see what is actually possible.

Let's make 2026 your smartest year yet.

"Before you spend, earn." 💸

It sounds simple, but in a world of "Buy Now, Pay Later," this is the ultimate financial discipline.

We love this checklist by William A. Ward because it applies perfectly to running a healthy business.

Before you invest, investigate: (Check the ROI).

Before you retire, save: (Plan your exit strategy).

Business isn't just about the hustle; it's about the preparation.

Which line hits home for you today? We are big fans of "Before you write, think!" 💭

"Expect the best. Prepare for the worst. Capitalise on what comes." — Zig Ziglar.

We love optimism in business, but optimism alone doesn't pay the bills when things get tough. 📉

The most successful business owners we work with aren't just "lucky." They are prepared.

They expect growth (Marketing).

They prepare for rain (Cash Flow Buffers).

They move fast when opportunities pop up (Agility).

You can’t control the economy, but you can control your books. If your financials are messy, you're just reacting. If they are clean, you're ready for anything.

Let's make sure you're ready for whatever 2026 throws at you.

We couldn't resist one last financial pun before Christmas! 🎄🤣

Technically, getting the employment classification right is critical... even for Santa. Imagine the payroll tax implications if they were contractors? 😅

To all our amazing clients and friends, we hope you are winding down for a safe and happy holiday season.

Merry Christmas from the First Class Accounts team! 🎅✨

Term of the Week: Cash Flow 💸

It’s the most important concept to understand before you close up for Christmas.

Here is the simple truth: Profit is what you make on paper. Cash Flow is what you actually have in the bank to pay the bills.

You can be a "profitable" business and still struggle in January if all your money is tied up in unpaid invoices while you're on holiday.

The Golden Rule: You can’t pay staff or rent with "Profit." You can only pay them with Cash.

Before you head to the beach, check your numbers. Make sure you have the buffer to bridge the gap. 🌊☀️

"If you would be wealthy, think of saving as well as getting." — Benjamin Franklin.

It’s the most common trap we see in small business: Obsessing over the "Top Line" (Sales) while ignoring the "Bottom Line" (Profit). 📉

You can work 60 hours a week chasing new clients, but if your operating costs are bloated or you’re bleeding cash on things you don't need, you’re just running on a treadmill.

Revenue is vanity. Profit is sanity.

Don't just ask "How can I make more?" this week. Ask "Where is my money actually going?"
