AI is changing what your business insurance covers, and Brisbane SMEs may have gaps they cannot see until a claim.
Australian insurers are rewriting policy wordings because businesses now use AI for marketing, customer service, software, design and administration. Some policies are adding affirmative AI cover, while others are tightening exclusions. The result is a “silent AI” grey zone, particularly across cyber, professional indemnity and media or intellectual property cover.
Before your next renewal, run this three-point check:
☐ Ask whether your policy mentions AI or contains AI-related exclusions.
☐ Tell your broker how your business actually uses AI tools, including any customer data or confidential information involved.
☐ Review your cyber and professional indemnity wording carefully. A gap may not become obvious until a claim is made.
The right cover depends on the real activities and risks in your business, not simply the name of the AI tool you use. A local insurance review can help identify questions to raise before you sign a renewal.
Poll: Has your business insurance been reviewed for AI-related risks? Comment YES, NO or NOT SURE.
