If you take a damage waiver on every hire, is your mini digger hire insurance doing the same job twice?

Hire agreements commonly make you responsible from delivery until collection: damage, theft, recovery and hire charges while the machine is repaired.

A damage waiver is not insurance. It is a contractual promise to limit what the hire company recovers for certain events, and theft from an unsecured site or an overturn may sit outside it.

Hired-in plant cover is the alternative for regular hirers. Check the per-item limit, loss of hire charges and the theft conditions against how machines are left overnight.

Read the guide below before your next hire, including who on site should sign the agreement, or call the team on 1300 983 940.

Products liability insurance deals with harm your goods cause after they have left your hands.

The products limit usually applies in the aggregate. One serious incident, or a batch fault that hurts several people, can use it up for the rest of the year.

Importers need a closer look. An importer can carry a manufacturer's exposure without any control over how the goods were made, so underwriters ask where goods are made, how they are tested and whether the overseas supplier holds its own cover.

Know the edges too. Recall costs and replacing the faulty product itself are typically excluded.

Online sellers, private label goods and the records that help defend a claim are in the guide below, or call the team on 1300 983 940.

Before anyone argues about who pays for strata water damage, find out what failed and when it started.

Each leak turns on four questions:
• Is the failed item common property or part of a lot?
• Was the escape of water sudden, or a slow leak over time?
• Does the policy include an allowance for finding the leak?
• Who in the scheme bears the excess under its by-laws?

The guide explains why the building policy typically responds to the damage rather than the hose that burst, and how to stop repeat leaks, so read it below or call the team on 1300 983 940.

Is the garaging address on your truck insurance in Melbourne still where the truck actually sleeps?

A truck in a locked, lit depot presents differently from one parked in a suburban street outside a driver's house. Theft and damage claims can be affected when the declared address is wrong, so update it when a driver starts taking a truck home.

Port work brings its own gap. Equipment interchange terms commonly make the carrier responsible for damage to a container in its possession. That is a contractual liability, not damage to your own vehicle.

Low-speed metro knocks count too, because a pattern of small claims tells an underwriter a story.

The guide below adds cameras, excess choices and interstate runs. To update a garaging address or area of operation, call the team on 1300 983 940.

Does your backhoe insurance know which policy responds on the road and which responds on site?

A backhoe digs, loads and drives itself between jobs. The compulsory third party element of registration generally deals with injury, not damage to property. Some plant policies exclude road risks for registered plant; others include them.

The occupation description needs the same care. A description that says excavation but not loading invites an argument at claim time.

Theft is the other gap. A registered machine can be driven away on a public road without drawing attention, and some machines share common ignition keys.

Attachments, residential work and the sum insured come next in the guide below, or talk it through with the team on 1300 983 940.

Tax audit insurance is designed for your accountant's fees during an audit, not the tax bill that may follow.

Before you join an accountant's group scheme, ask four plain questions:
• Is it insurance, or a service arrangement run by the practice?
• What happens to your cover if you change accountants?
• Are you, the company, the trust and the super fund all included?
• How are notices you already knew about treated?

Read the guide below for what the cover typically responds to and what it excludes, including penalties and interest, or call the team on 1300 983 940.

Carting for others while declared as own goods use is the classic trap in hire and reward truck insurance.

Own goods means the truck carries the business's own materials. Hire and reward means it carries someone else's goods, for payment. Insurers do not all draw the line in the same place.

If the truck is doing paid carting when an accident happens and the policy says own goods, the claim may be questioned, reduced or refused, depending on the wording.

Use tends to change quietly. A builder starts carting for a mate, then for a few other builders. Tell your broker before the first job of the new kind, not at renewal.

The guide below also deals with the goods on the back and subcontracting, or call the team on 1300 983 940 to check your use description.

Who lodges a strata insurance claim, and who pays the excess once the assessor has been through?

The building policy belongs to the owners corporation, so a lot owner generally cannot lodge directly. You report the damage to the strata manager, who decides with the committee whether a claim is made.

The excess is a separate question. Some schemes pay it from scheme funds; others pass it to the lot where the damage started, where by-laws or resolutions allow. That varies, so check current requirements before assuming.

With water damage, policies typically respond to the resulting damage from a sudden escape, not to repairing the failed pipe itself.

The guide below sets out the first day or two, step by step. Committees can call the team on 1300 983 940 to review excesses and claims arrangements.

Drilling rig insurance has to reach below the surface, where some of the most expensive losses happen out of sight.

Many plant policies exclude equipment below the surface, so ask four questions about gear lost in the hole:
• Is downhole equipment included at all, and to what limit per event?
• Does it extend to recovery attempts, or only the value of what was lost?
• Are there conditions on depth or reasonable efforts to recover?
• How does it treat gradual wear against sudden loss?

The guide below also deals with transit, service strikes and the point where geotechnical work becomes a professional indemnity question; call the team on 1300 983 940 to talk it through.

Relying on the batching plant's policy is a common gap in concrete truck insurance for owner-drivers.

The supplier's policies are written for the supplier. Supply contracts commonly ask you to carry your own motor and liability cover, and to indemnify the supplier. That indemnity can make you responsible for losses your policy was never written to respond to.

The drum needs its own thinking. Accidental damage in a rollover can fall within own damage cover, subject to the wording. A failed gearbox or seized hydraulic motor is generally treated as breakdown and excluded.

If a load sets in the drum, some policies may respond and others exclude it. Find out which applies before it happens.

Before you sign a supply contract, read the guide below, then call the team on 1300 983 940 to review the insurance clauses.
