Surveying the first twenty-five years of his career, All That We Are follows John Perceval’s creative trajectory as he shifts from unsettling portrayals of childhood memories and wartime experiences to exuberant imagery inspired by the European Old Masters and later gestural, vibrant land and seascapes.

As part of his attempt to avoid good taste ‘like the plague’, John Perceval created a series of tiled-top coffee tables and platters decorated with playful, chaotic vignettes inspired by scenes from Charlie Chaplin and Marx Brothers films.

Often featuring jovial characters, farmyard animals and high-spirited antics from village life or adventures at sea, the popular coffee tables softened the distinction between the art object and lived space, reminding us that imagination and humour belong in everyday life.

Closing this weekend, John Perceval: All That We Are pays homage to the first three decades of maverick Australian modernist John Perceval and his deeply humanist oeuvre. Tickets available here:
