MEMORY LANE MoNDAY

Sometimes a little piece of Boulia’s history is right there in front of us.

Back in 2021, a former Mount Isa District police officer, brought a historic police grave in Boulia to QPS’ attention. It was in need of some much-deserved TLC.

Constable Gordon Allan Campbell was serving as a police officer in Boulia when he passed away on 7 July 1937.

In true small-town spirit, the Boulia community came together to show their respect. Local police cleared the weeds and tidied the site, while locals contributed roses from their own gardens to create a fresh bouquet.

It was a simple gesture, but one that speaks volumes about our community, respect and remembering those who served.

With honour, he served.

Spotted around the waterways near Boulia, this beautifully marked bird was captured enjoying a quiet perch on a branch over the water.

We think it might be a juvenile Nankeen Night Heron… but we’re not 100% sure! 🤔

Travelling through the Boulia Shire means sharing the road with some of Australia’s biggest road trains.

These impressive rigs can stretch up to 53.5 metres long, carrying essential cattle, freight and supplies across some of the most remote roads in the country.

Whether you’re a local, a visitor or just passing through, knowing how to safely share the road with these outback giants can make all the difference.

✅ Be patient – they’re big, heavy, and can’t stop quickly.
✅ Give them room – don’t cut in front after overtaking.
✅ Let them pass safely – pull over slightly if you’re slower and conditions allow.
✅ Use UHF (Channel 40) to communicate—many drivers appreciate a friendly heads-up.
✅ When overtaking: wait for a long, clear stretch of road. It can take 1 km+ to pass safely.
🛣️ Out here, we all share the road. Respect the size, speed, and skill it takes to drive these rigs—and you’ll have a safer, smoother journey.

A little piece of outback history from the 1950s! 🏜️

This wonderful old photograph captures the boundary between the Boulia and Bedourie Shires, giving us a glimpse into our region’s past and the neighbouring communities that have shared this vast outback landscape for generations.

Today, Boulia is approximately 196 km north of Bedourie, and we’re proud to pay homage to our neighbours in the Diamantina Shire. 🤎

It’s amazing to look back and see just how much has changed — while the vast outback country remains as familiar as ever.

While travelling the Donohue Highway on his way to Alice Springs for the 2026 Developing Northern Australia Conference (DNAC26) and the Outback Highway Development Council Meeting, Boulia Shire Mayor Rick took a moment to stop and soak in the incredible scenery.

Captured near Glenormiston, this stunning video pans from the west, sweeping north and around to the east, showcasing the magnificent Georgina River and the endless beauty of Queensland’s outback.

It’s easy to see why this drive is considered one of Australia’s great outback journeys. With landscapes like these around every bend, the Donohue Highway offers an unforgettable experience for anyone exploring the heart of the country.

This wonderful glimpse into Boulia’s aviation history takes us back to 1954–1955, when pilot Jim Murtha and hostess Hannah Evans paused for a well-earned rest in the shade beneath an aircraft at Boulia.

Captured by Geoffrey Luck and now preserved in the University of Queensland Library collection, the photograph offers a fascinating snapshot of life in the outback during the early days of commercial aviation.

It’s believed the aircraft is a Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) plane, that used to fly the outback Queensland route.

Recent winter rain has transformed the Boulia Shire, covering the landscape in vibrant wildflowers and turning the iconic red earth into a sea of vibrant colour.

Mayor Rick says this is one of the finest seasons the region has experienced in decades.

“It’s probably one of the best seasons Boulia has seen since the 1970s. Thanks to the winter rain and fair weather, the plants are still thriving. Winter rain often brings wildflowers, but the display we’re seeing this year is truly exceptional.”

He added that Goodwood, south-east of Boulia, had recorded 365mm (14 inches and 60 points) of rain so far this year, with rainfall recorded every month since February. That’s well above the area’s usual annual average of around 230mm.

If you’re planning a trip through Outback Queensland, now is the perfect time to experience this rare and beautiful natural display.
