A fruit fly outbreak has been declared in Semaphore Park. Are you in the affected area?
You’ll notice PIRSA’s team of fruit fly fighters, wearing orange overalls and carrying official ID, will be applying bait to trees in our area to rid the State of pesky fruit fly, capable of destroying your backyard fruit and vegetables, as well as our commercial production of fruit and vegetables.
A quarantine area is in place for:
- Ethelton
- Glanville
- New Port
- Semaphore
- Semaphore Park
- Semaphore South
- West Lakes
- West Lakes Shore
If you live in these areas, you can help by:
- ALLOWING easy access to your front and back gardens – and restraining any dogs - so PIRSA staff can do their work quickly – they’ll make sure they keep the necessary social distancing.
- REPORTING any maggots found in fruit or fruiting vegetables. Place in a plastic bag, seal it and contact the Fruit Fly Hotline (1300 666 010)
- NOT SHARING home-grown fresh fruit with others within or outside the outbreak area
- COLLECTING fallen or over-ripe fruit and fruiting vegetables and placing in your green bin. Do not put them in compost
- COOKING OR PRESERVING home grown fruit and fruiting vegetables. These items are allowed to be removed from the outbreak area after they’ve been cooked or preserved.
- PICKING any unwanted fruit from your trees (and all fruit on the ground) and disposing of it in your green bin – this helps break the fruit fly life cycle.
By following these steps you are helping keep SA fruit fly free. These arrangements will remain in place until at least 18 December 2020.
