20,000 years ago, you could have walked from Melbourne to Tasmania.

At the height of the last Ice Age, huge ice sheets had locked up so much of Earth's water that sea level was about 120 metres (400 ft) lower than today. Bass Strait is only about 60 metres deep on average, so when the water dropped, the whole strait became dry land. Scientists call this lost land the Bassian Plain. It stretched between the Victorian coast and northern Tasmania, and Tasmania was not an island but the southern tip of mainland Australia.

The deepest part of the basin held a large, shallow lake, shown in light blue on the top map (its outline is only an approximate model from seafloor elevation data).

Aboriginal people crossed this land bridge into Tasmania more than 40,000 years ago. Then the ice melted. The sea rose and began flooding the basin, and around 14,000 years ago (some estimates say 12,000) the connection was severed and Tasmania became an island. By about 8,000 years ago the whole plain was under water, and Tasmania's people were cut off from the mainland.

The dashed line on the top map shows today's coastline. Everything between it and the Ice Age sea is now under water.
