Offset accounts can help you to pay off your home loan sooner. Put simply, the more you keep in there, the less interest you pay.

ASIC has found some offset accounts haven't been working properly, quietly costing borrowers thousands in extra interest. Banks have already paid back $55 million to affected customers, with more expected.

The tricky part is you'd probably never notice. Your repayment stays the same each month, so there's nothing obvious flagging that something's wrong.
