In recent months we have seen many theft claims, and it is a timely reminder to put a few prevention measures in place so your belongings don’t go walkabout.
💡 Lock it up
The first tip is an obvious one that can be easily missed when opening windows to let the Autumn breeze in or forgetting to lock the shed/garage door on the weekends.
Put your vehicle windows up, close the sunroof or convertible top, lock the doors, and never leave your keys inside the vehicle.
💡 Don’t advertise your valuables.
Keep your lawnmowers and bicycles stored out of sight and locked up. Use curtains on garage and basement windows to hide what’s inside. Don’t leave valuables out in your car, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, wallets, purses, shopping bags, etc.
💡 Install some security.
You can go as big or as small as you like with this. Motion Sensor exterior lighting would be a great start. If you have the budget or means, installing some security cameras and an alarm system might appeal to you. Pets, like dogs (big or small), are also an excellent deterrent for thieves.
💡 Make it look like someone is home.
If you’re planning to be away from home for a while, do your best to make it look like you’re still there. Leave a light on in and outside. If you are leaving for an extended time, have someone check on your house, collect your mail, move your car and mow your lawns.
💡 Landscape strategically.
Consider thorny rose bushes beneath accessible windows. Keep other plants trimmed so that thieves cannot hide behind them. Gravel paths and driveways are also effective in indicating an unwelcomed visitor.
