Australia's Silent Bitumen Shortage.

Remember those fuel supply worries Australia faced not long ago? Well, right after that, another problem crept up quietly. It is the bitumen shortage. Bitumen is that sticky black stuff that holds our asphalt roads together.

The issue got worse after some refinery closures. These days Australia pretty much relies on just one main producer here at home. That is Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery in Victoria. It simply cannot keep up with what the whole country needs.

We ended up depending heavily on imports. Every year we bring in hundreds of thousands of tonnes of bitumen, mostly from Asia.

Then global troubles made everything harder.

Prices shot up fast. In 2026, tensions around the Strait of Hormuz really disrupted supplies. Bitumen prices doubled or jumped by around 500 dollars per tonne. Suppliers had to hunt for stuff from far away places like Venezuela.

And its not over.

The shortage is still hanging around. Supply problems keep going. Road projects get delayed and cost more. Fixing potholes is getting way more expensive right across the country.

To deal with it, standards were lowered temporarily. Authorities relaxed the rules so they could use bitumen that does not quite meet our usual high quality for Australian roads. It helped keep things moving, but it leaves worries about how long those roads will last.

It feels pretty embarrassing when you think about it. Australia is loaded with oil and natural resources. Yet here we are importing most of our bitumen. Our limited local refining leaves us open to every global shock. We could fix this by building up more production at home.

This silent shortage touches every driver on our huge half million kilometres of roads. Higher prices. Ongoing supply headaches. Those temporary lower standards.

It is a clear reminder that we should make better use of our own resources.

Off the coast of the northern suburbs of Perth, two pipelines that will help secure the city’s future for decades to come are being laid.

The shorter of the two, which extends 1.6 km from the shore, will pull seawater from deep below the ocean’s surface and transfer it to the Alkimos Water Precinct, where a new desalination plant will filter and treat it, then remove salt, bacteria, viruses and other impurities via reverse osmosis. The resulting drinkable water will then be delivered to Perth’s water network.
